like I am pretty sure we all knew Rainbow Capitalism stuff was performative but it’s still jarring to see like every company on Earth go “well thank CHRIST we don’t have to do THAT anymore” because one shitty guy became president

was more jarred than I thought I would be by my employers “ok phew no more dei” email. Not because its gonna change anything just bc its so openly cynical
I have a real tinfoil hat theory going about rainbow capitalism. I think it wants a country that's mostly intolerant with islands of tolerance. I think that creates a flow of downwardly mobile young adults from bigoted areas to tolerant areas which suppresses wages in those places
You wind up with big communities of people who can't really afford to live in the city but also can't go home to the families that booted them out so they're desperate enough to accept wages a lot lower than what they're worth. I think that's mission accomplished for rainbow capitalism
honestly attributing any strategy to the minds behind this crap beyond Veruca Salt-like "MINE MINE MINE ME ME ME" grabby toddler nonsense is giving them too much credit
someone once told them they couldn't use the n-word or the r-word and that became their entire supervillain origin story
As long as a divide exists -read, forever- the intolerant will tolerate islands of tolerance because those islands provide a screen for their own intolerance.
This why MAGA is behind a quarter of the Democrats in office. They need their screen defense. Can't have a ratchet effect without it.
It's worth noting that there has been a concerted, organised shareholder lobbying effort by a right wing lobby group. CostCo's statement rejecting these efforts discussed the matter in detail.
Yeah Ive seen this up close as well. They knew the minute he was elected that DEI was going to be a thing so I guess someone warned them ahead of time, and they are afraid.
the overall shift in the past ten years from "wow, what if life were good and people were safe and included" to "maybe disabilities ARE funny" has been a fucking trip
call me naive but I don’t think letting the mask slip and telling literally all minority groups “just kidding” because you perceived the opportunity to do so is actually a winning long-term strategy
Oh my god you just reminded me that one of the best shows in Idiocracy was a guy getting hit in the balls all the time...
Please tell me there's not a movie coming out called Ass...
Don’t know if not feeling surprised is a privilege or not (as sadly, daily life has taught me otherwise). Just now a line has to be upheld and we need to stand by our beliefs even more and not let them be the ones who decide what is acceptable. We gotta make a stand and show them they fumbled.

They just hate it that much
At least I can feel good about Costco. And proud that it is a local company.
