You want Labor in 3 yrs to overturn a system that has been in place for nearly 200 yrs . Geelong Grammar opened in 1855. Free TAFE , changed to HECs and funding arrangements with WA schools is a start . Cutting off funding to private schools overnight would be political suicide . Do it selectively

But they aren't even really trying. They have further intrenched the current inequity. Their negotiations with the States to increase funding are a joke and they aren't even starting to decrease the money given to private schools. Such a disappointment.

Because they are trying to only pay half of their obligation. Worse, even if, as in WA, they agree to that, there is still a 4% shortfall no one wants to talk about, thanks to Morrison which includes not educational expenses like transport & depreciation in public school SRS but not in Privates.

Not sure how you overturn nearly 2 centuries of private school funding entitlement and privilege in a term of govt .TAFE, HECs payments and funding arrangements with WA govt is a start .Edn restructuring will be done in stages with good evidence based research .Not holding my breath on Teal support

Community donations built this school. It was maintained and extended with gummint funds. Your money. Our money.
Now the school is closed and the property is part of the church’s commercial property portfolio. It makes me so fucking sick.

The loyalty to their private school, by parents and students, becomes a cult. They cannot see the societal damage these private schools do. AND the mega rich schools rely on the poor catholic and muslim schools to hide behind as soon as anyone points out the inequality of private vs public funding.

It's extraordinary when you talk to teachers in similar countries to ours and they are gobsmacked by our system. We are the only country that does what we do- hand out millions to private schools with almost no strings attached.

I have been thinking and researching and analysing and explaining this for two decades. Private schools are complicit in funding policy. Worse they fearmonger and actively lobby, whenever changes are suggested. They literally steal the opportunities from our neediest kids.

These schools do not need Govt financial assistance. They have fat balance sheets and over the top facilities. Their fees should have GST applied like what the new UK Govt has done with VAT.

In my experience working in and with all three systems over forty years, the vast majority of very good to excellent teachers remain in the state schools, the average to poor find their way to the religious schools. Hope it remains that way.

The vast majority of any disadvantaged group you care to name - Indigenous, bottom 2 income quartiles, refugee, disabled - attend public schools over 90% in many cases. Catholic schools overwhelmingly educate the middle class.

Had occasion once to talk with Ralph Willis who was a minister in the Hawke Labor Gov't. I went on about wealth & privilege and how private schools shouldn’t be getting gov’t funding. He wasn’t having it. They fill a need, he said. So if not Labor then certainly not the Libs. They’re here to stay!

I've attended and taught in both. The $$ and admin problems of the public system destroy teachers and let down students every single day. I didn't learn to be a great teacher until I left that system.

I boarded at one of those and a few years ago returned, out of curiosity, for our 60th anniversary since leaving. I voiced the opinion that govt funding for the school is indecent, the facilities now are extraordinary, and was supported by fellow ex-boarders, howled down by the Sydney dwellers 🥴

Not as big as you think. They benefit from being part of brand Private. In the same way Dior make up benefits from Dior couture. And almost all of them are overfunded according to their SRS, like the other private schools.
