Depends on how you're judging them: are you looking the story (which I admit are usually kind of ...lame) or the music, which is quite often worth the dumb story line. In fact, many times I'll buy a musical's soundtrack without ever actually seeing the show.
say what you will about the rest of Webber's work, but you know what everybody likes? Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's see Phantom of the Opera," they say, "Hell no, I don't like Phantom of the Opera."
With a few notable exceptions you’re looking at small amount of signature/good songs per show, and a bunch of stuff they came up with at 4 in the morning to connect them.

Song and dance in the street! Beautiful! I hate it.
Bad, because?
How can you not think Fiddler and Jersey Boys were great?
* Singin' in the Rain
* West Side Story
Watch those two, and you can see the broad possibilities of Musicals, even before we get into the complexities of more modern ones.
Hit that one first. If you don't like it, fuck you: you're not allowed to watch any more musicals.
