by the way, once again, no genre had the kind of quality control funk did for the first ten or so years of its existence. Find me a bad funk song open challenge
There was such a large bench of incredibly talented black musicians (music being one of the fields that black Americans could socially be allowed to work WWII/pre civil rights) that the benches of session musicians and singers from the gospel/blues/soul genres were DEEP.
When they had the opportunity to lead prosper and occasionally profit the talent pool of musicians was just insane. The session guys of the era were insanely talented, and all of that just exploded into the funk era. Those guys were no-shit talented.
Rags to Rufus has been one of my favourite albums since my parents used to play it in the car in the '70s, and I just learned this fact now. From this post.
OMG. What kills me is that once I know, the off beat first verse and the perfect yet always surprising chord progression make me think that I should have known this immediately.
