Warnings of language as a weapon of manipulation, obfuscation and oppression run through George Orwell’s work. It is a reason you could be excused for hearing real-life echoes of scenes from “1984” emanating from Washington, Matthew Purdy writes.

Or are we living in Neal Postman’s second scenario of a dystopian society. One in which the espousal of disinformation, used to confuse us, is the point.
We are not worthy of knowing their plan, in the eyes of Trump’s team. We are puppets. Lies are a tool.
BLOG: I say it again! Foreigners & minorities in US should leave IMMEDIATELY. The purges have begun, you are next. Don’t make the same fatal mistake as millions of European jews in WW2. Here is a non-comprehensive list of the vulnerable. Don’t gamble with your life.
NYT has been at the forefront of leading us to real-life 1984, covering Trump with a blizzard of euphemisms, reporting his big lies without the context that he is LYING, misrepresenting the economy under Biden, and in two years of election coverage failing to report what Trump planned to do.
It follows politician, Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, who rises to power becoming the USA's first dictator (in allusion to Adolf Hitler's rise in Nazi Germany), and a newspaper editor who sees his fascist policies for what they truly are..
I taught this book in my U.S. Government class in 2000 and the English teacher was dumbfounded that I was using it for that course. I wonder if she gets it now?
Yes but they can't actually point to Biden inhibiting free speech, surveilling people for exercising their free speech or for false propaganda.
Just like they yell Communist or Marxist, with no thought behind any of it.
Sure they can. The DEI/CRT complex, who the Biden administration was in bed with, (until Oct 7th), stifled free speech thru mandatory "trainings" and propaganda. And thats before we even get to them intimidating facebook into blocking "misinformation" about COVID.
So you think training stifles free speech? How?
Our country has a problem with racism, it's facts.
Not talking & training about what racism looks like on a functional level is why we still have a problem despite it being 2025.
Trump has literally banned words from government, like "Women" & "Sex".
No worse than banning "illegal alien" or banning "transexual" or using "birthing person" in place of "mother." Which are not, and never were slurs. Yes, just like any multicultural society, there are some racial prejudices every which way.
No one banned those words, they created a policy to change them to be more modern. Old terms were still allowed. "Illegal alien" is derogatory. If you can't understand that, congrats on being a backwards human being.
And my post was about 2020-when Biden wasnt even in office yet. The corporate and entertainment complex wrapped their arms around DEI, for fear of being called "racist" if they didn't.
What part do you struggle with? The diversity part where we accept others regardless of our differences?
The equity part where we are flexible to accommodate those who need adjustments?
Or the inclusion part where we don't shut out people like middle school bullies?
We aren't all living in George Orwell's world now, just Americans thanks. Mostly thanks to your publications hypernormalisation of the current US government.
Yes, US Media - yes you, @nytimes.com - have done the US, our democracy, and the world a grave disservice by sanewashing all things Trump, casting suspicion on your journalistic ethics.
HAPPY to give you examples, they are ongoing.
@nytimes.com writers need to study disinformation, not use it!

Just got this beauty in the mail from the Orwell Society. In our new authoritarian world, it’s inspiring to have a piece of the roof that sheltered Orwell while he wrote his masterful warning about what happens when an authoritarian regime takes hold.
The US is just ONE Skiddy-mer-rink-a-dink away from going FULL on Gileadian. In TWO short months a well respected, well trusted & admired Nation has morphed into 1930's Germany where they've replaced the Gestapo with ICE, replaced Rail Cars for Airplanes to send who-knows-who off the HELL on Earth.
In 2006, I attended a lecture at London School of Economics, where their Professor of Human Rights, Conor Gearty, argued that 1984 was the greatest human rights book of all times over the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It sad & maddening that both parties seem to think it's a play-book, and not something to abhor. How do we get back to championing the truth instead of peddling BS? How do we get the people to reject said BS? Too often they seem to be happy to believe it - as long as it's aligns w/ their biases 😔
Yes, it is a "both sides" issue we're facing when both parties have no problems flagrantly lying to and manipulating the public, with too many of their supporters following suit.
That's a problem. One that only seems to be worsening as the years pass.
Orwell? But you have only to listen the usual propaganda of the Belgian and French official media, or of the ARTE channel, to hear the current language of weapon. I do not read in my Belgian newspapers, about the war in Ukraine or the customs tariffs, the debates I see in the Washington Post.
The NYTs refuses to recognize themself as part of the problem here. Consider your coverage of the second world war: ignoring the genocide, the times' racist coverage of the Civil Rights movement, and using "language as a weapon of manipulation" against Palestinians today.
“You could be excused…”? In times like these… I see through you NYT, with the power y’all have it’s just pathetic the littlest alarm y’all are barely sounding.
JD Vance is not Joseph Goebbels and the US in 2025 is not Germany in 1933. But language matters. The language of populist grievance, elite betrayal, and existential crisis, spoken with just enough reasonableness to be palatable is not harmless. Vance is copying Goebbels’ posture.

Speak truth onto power, not a chance.
Get out on the streets and fight back. Nobody is coming to save you except yourselves.

The Confederacy is back and we're letting them rewrite the past. The future they want is very dark, and it's taking shape every day.
The endless, repetitive spew of lies and disinformation is NOT 'free speech', its a method for programming youth.

I sold you and you sold me.
Yep, sound 84ish today.
You are still the paper of record NYT, and you still drive a lot of discourse in this country. We need you to hold the line on reality.
And the US government is using the same language as was used in Germany in 1933
And also you want to be looking at your president because he is seizing power literally seizing power, he is already working on having a third term!
