Dunno how tf anyone could think there's not enough NYPD. They're literally omnipresent. You're never more than a block or two away from a station, you see them standing around every few blocks, the cars are constantly on the sidewalk or bike lane. Even the undercovers are conspicuous af.
As a Gen X’er it boggles my mind when Boomers say New York is this crime ridden hellhole that’s worse than it has ever been, especially people who were there both then and now.
and those that have, arent sharing how good the city can be for elders.... buses, curbside markets, discount museums... tons of interesting people. NYC has a whole stream of street-side dawdling that busy hip ppl dont even notice...😝
Most of the city is a dream for the elderly. Within a 5 minute easy walk you can hit your grocery store, dry cleaners, get a cup of coffee, hit the pharmacy and even hardware store. Every thing I just mentioned is within two blocks of my front door
This boomer grew up in NY in the 70’s - and still visits regularly. No comparison, it’s SOOOO much safer and cleaner now(and sanitized, more chain stores, etc.)
The median such person lives in a neighborhood with slightly less crime than NYC on the whole, and half a mile from three much larger neighborhoods they've never once set foot in with double NYC's crime.
When I lived in NYC, the cops were very interested in broken windows theory, so any small interaction with them was immediately hostile. I lived in Bed Stuy, and they would set up NYPD watchtowers in the middle of intersections, helicopters every day. My small town Canada mind was blown.
My ex’s brother was an MTA cop. I was scared enough of them. Now National Guardsmen with automatic weapons?! For what? A spike in iPhone thefts? “Grand Larcenies?”
Minneapolis police defunded themselves when they all quit after George Floyd and they haven't hired half their numbers back, and yet, go figure, crime stats are down and the teams that respond to mental health issues have 100% success rate with no injuries. Almost like Public Safety isn't about cops
I was actually surprised when I saw pics of military with full autos guarding things. And it takes a lot to surprise me. Like holy shit. Is subway crime that bad? I feel like it's a pretense to be able to control people's movements during the upcoming election riots.
It's not (yet, Hochul hasn't deployed anyone) about Subway Crime™.
There is a NY Guard mission which is for "counter-terrorism". So Grand Central, World Trade (including the 33rd St PATH station) all have rotations of armed troops (Army/Air Force) standing around being bored.
I don't live in NYC -- it would be too much for me -- but my brother has for most of his adult life. As far as I can tell from many visits to him, it's an ecosystem, with rules like any other. Woe be unto those who want to swan in from the outside and pass judgement. Or add soldiers.
Nothing made me more anxious in the immediacy of that 2 mos to 1 yr post-9/11 era than seeing armed National Guard troops outside the LIRR bathrooms at NY-Penn (y'all know the ones.)
The "crime-ridden" version of New York is such a staple of tv, movies, even comic books--sonic crime that spider-man finds a mugging within minutes at any given time, right?--that if you don't live there or follow the news, it seems like a war zone.
I am not from the land of New York and I know there's too many cops. Thing is I subscribe to the notion of ACAB so I genuinely think less cops are always better in every conceivable situation no matter the location so...
It is political theater being performed in order to say to white, middle class suburban women that she's looking out for their safety. This isn't about the safety of the residents of NYC.
I noticed when the 2011 riots were happening literally at my front door that the desire for violent police intervention increased in inverse proportion to proximity to the violence.
I know there reasons for this observation are innumerable, but I visited Tokyo recently and the lack of visible law enforcement is astounding when compared to NYC. It's *rare* to see a cop, especially out of their cars. NYC has officers and militarized police friggin *everywhere*

Not even close.
Lots of people have it

This is serving a different purpose
I'm already late to getting home.
