If America is waking up, my primary concern continues to be whether trans people's resistance will be a symbol of the need to resist tyranny, or if our humanity will be a negotiating chip to paper over divisions among factions.

"If y'all can show the traitors, liars, blasphemers, fornicators and adulterers in the #MAGA party respect, it can't be any more challenging to treat trans people as humans."
this is something that haunts me, as well. I've often found my rights to be treated as negotiable even among people who know me and should care--it's hard to trust that others will care for trans rights if they're not directly in the line of fire. i hope to be pleasantly surprised 🤞🤞
There's so little room between "we need to protect the women and children for the trannies" and "let's scoop them up off the street, because."
And you know that there will be no uproar or concern if a trans person disappears under this corrupt regime.
The acid in the salve: bargaining our rights away to make an alliance with bigots a d stop MAGA means you failed to defeat the fascism; you just saved your own hide.
One of the things I've learned about myself over the past 3 months is that I am an American. For good or ill, I'm invested in this country's ideals and its survival. I imprinted on the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. It's part of me now.
I've been living in Japan for a year and a half now, and while I love so many things here, this has really been my realization too. my American friends talk about never wanting to go back, and while there's lots of things I could do the rest of my life without, that's my home, and that won't change
But, much of the country has decided that my free speech, as a trans person, is a problem. They see the use of my voice in defense of myself and other trans people as censorious.
They'll fight to the death for a KKK member's right to use slurs-but not for my right to declare my equality.
And, I think that's the crossroads the country is facing. If we're to get back to the ideals I learned in middle school. We need to wake up to the fact that some Americans were willing to countenance fascism because they so deeply hate the implications of real equality.
Which shouldn’t be surprising given that it took a war (and more) for us to end slavery when lots of other countries just passed a law, then another hundred years to grant equal rights to (technically) to everyone. We have NEVER fully been who we say we are.
As a young lesbian woman, I already know what it means to fight to exist fully and freely.
And your words don’t just support trans people, they challenge anyone who claims to believe in justice, freedom,
or democracy to prove it by standing with the most vulnerable.
I will not be a part of any coalition that treats the rights of my trans and gender expansive friends, family, colleagues, and fellow human beings as negotiable

I don’t care if an ally is some bigoted wine mom, only that they’re in the fight to save our democracy.
The salve: Trans rights are an impossibility under fascism.

Except, you know, racist, etc.

It matters. You matter. Your voice carries across borders, across fears, across hate. And it carries truth.
