If we ever come out on the other side of this, I think attitudes about the danger of concentration of wealth for democracy will be different than they have been.

I was convinced billionaires shouldn't exist for sustainability reasons alone. But people don't get that, they think infinite money in some hands is somehow compatible with life on earth.
Americans will be hoodwinked by an Obama-like figure again.
There will be lots of talk and little to no action. 99% of what Trump’s doing will stand and in effect, be sanctioned by inaction.
Nah this is a country of servile morons without any sort of political memory. If (big if) we get through this and implement some program to reverse the trends towards concentrations of wealth and monopolization the populace will quickly be propagandized back into giving the rich everything they want
Americans are incapable of learning from their mistakes and a sustainably better society is not possible. The pathologically individualistic ideology of this country is a millstone around the neck that it will never take off
I always thought the "billionaires are fundamentally evil" argument was pretty dumb but the "no one should have that much power" argument is looking pretty good right now.
The state of California’s revenue in a year is around $220B. Elon’s net worth went up about that much after the election (it’s since reversing because the FO part is beginning)
It was clear then the American people were over the wealth gap and understood that money is a weak construct. They then voted for a man who promised to be the most progressive president of all time.
But he was actually just another conservative democrat.
I'm not even a lefty and thought "billionaires shouldn't exist" was crazy talk, but just the past month has been enough to change my mind. We can't have citizens united and billionaires.
Also perhaps a deep think about the idea that fiduciary duty means that a rich enough evil robot with express designs to destroy things needs to be allowed to buy whatever they want
My only hope is Canada will open it's doors to refugees from the "United" States. With a Gerrymandered Congress, the Electoral College and a Rubber Stamp "Supreme" Court, I don't see any other way out.
Americans’ memories last about six minutes so no, nothing will change. Americans will just get distracted by the latest squirrel and buy into the same empty slogans and scapegoats as always.
The Louisiana Purchase was done in part to provide land for more Americans to have their own farms to work and profit from, helping spread America's wealth more broadly because Jefferson knew the destabilizing power of concentrated wealth.
Then the industrial revolution hit & fucked that plan up.
Maybe "every billionaire is a policy failure" is too arbitrary in its cut points but I hope people think hard about where that idea comes from next time around.
I hope when this is over, we abolish billionaires. It's too much money and can only lead to harm. If you're rich enough to overthrow governments, you're too fucking rich. Once you hit 999,999,999, you're taxed at 100%. No loopholes. No offshore tax havens. You use our infrastructure, you pay for it.
If our so-called “leaders”‘remain the same group of useless, self-serving vampires, nothing will change. Both parties must be purged of the vacant ghouls currently in place. If the same people who lost to this maniac TWICE are still expected to save us in 2028, don’t bother.
If. That is a very big - and increasingly dubious - if.
Those discussions have been had for a long time. They made no difference - people still voted anyway for the orange traitor Trump with his evil sidekick Musk alongside.
Isn't this missing the point entirely? Concentration of wealth is the danger to democracy. One of its downstream effects is not only trump coming into office off of broad voter malaise, but a freedom to act based on Capitalist buy-in to his program.
I f this was 100 years ago, maybe. With the weaponizatiom of all social media spheres, a sizable percentage of people will still continue to believe that it’s a good thing.

And then they elected a conservative named Joe Biden instead and liberals spent 4 years telling everyone not to criticize him.

People were already well aware of this and voted the traitor in anyway.
This issue has been talked through endlessly over the years.
Do you really think I would be so stupid as to reply without understanding that fundamental issue?
Come on. Of course not.
There will be a future.
