Want to read a book but can’t afford to buy it?
❌ don’t pirate/steal it
✅ join your local library and borrow the book for FREE.
If the library doesn’t have the book you want, ask if they can buy it.
You get to read.
Authors get paid.
Libraries stay open.
✨ Triple win ✨

I worry about the future of libraries and parks. Don't let them take away that right. Stand up and speak out! Join the movement! @50501movement.bsky.social

The digital library app. 📚
Changed my life.
Not even an exaggeration.

And I’ll add that you can be a Libby cardholder for more than one library! There are digital libraries you can join. I recently found out (here, I think) about https://www.queerliberationlibrary.org/, and “read” a book that won’t leave my mind. I’ll post that separately.
If someone shows me a book I will not read it until I actually buy it.
So now I have a lot of books because of this.
Sorry if your ebook is priced at 10$ I am not reading it. 😮💨
Some folks knew some things.
Some folks know and share the knowledge.
On Tuesdays we used to return the tapes and they used to look for books 📚to read at home!
My dd1 takes her kids to the library 📚
But I believe strongly in authors getting paid for their work so it's tricky.
Libraries are not free but they are worth it.
Sounds dubious.
Unfortunately, even though I have access to a large library system, there are a lot of books unavailable in audio through them.
So I've had an audible membership for years.
I'm looking for an alternative -- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

But manu books never make it into public libraries, at least in audio book form, or are no longer available.
That's when I use Audible.
Didn't know I could buy access to another library -- I'll check out your idea
Hoopla from many libraries also has audio. And Librivix for public domain.
Such great services
But yes, check library always.
They ain't getting paid. I hate my Library here, they always misgender me and are rude.
How is downloading a book that someone who bought that book posts online.
Any different than a library that lends a book someone bought and donated?
It's not the author is not getting paid any more for you borrowing a library book.
Authors only get paid by sales.
If your library offers a book (ebook, audiobook, hardback or paperback) you know they paid for it.
(This is joke. I buy so many books I’m my own library.)
As for books, like novels, especially older ones: sure.
Also, many university libraries -- especially public universities -- have free or low cost access for members of the public.
Basically, if you're a student, you might get access at a reduced fee of hundreds of dollars.
I'm in Ontario. The library near here is used by work from home.
Want to get exposed to an author before buying a book?
Want to research a particular subject, but don’t want to buy a bunch of books?
There are plenty of reasons you might want to temporarily own a book. Libraries let you do it.
The best part? Academic authors rarely get paid for writing their books.
SOMEONE bought that book (maybe even me)
You have "don't pirate" crossed off, meaning I'm meant to pirate it AND use a library, I guess?
