To get a sense of what we're looking at - where are the stars in relation to that nebula? Are they at the same distance as it, or in the foreground/background?
I was just watching a short documentary called “Decoding the Universe: Cosmos” on PBS. It’s a free and educational watch that I found quite edifying. One interesting fact I learned is that there are more planets than stars! Wowy.
C'est supperbe ces photos, mais sur place ce n'est qu'extreme fournaise, pesanteur, froid absolu, , turbulences effroyables, loin d'un endroit paisible sur terre adapté à l:homme.
for this specific image, it’s a composite of different exposures made by a few instruments on hubble using different filters for broad and narrow wavelength ranges and the colors are from assigning colors to each separate image!
Absolutely! It could be better only one way: if we cohld also travel in space! So I hope reincarnation exists, and I will born later, when we can travel in space too 😍 Until then, I am happy for these amazing photos 🥰
Yes, me too! I’ve always kind of hoped that when we die, we get to just kind of fly off through space and see all the glorious sights for all eternity. Like endless Star Trek, but as a ghost. I mean, I’d be happier with that than some boring old streets paved with gold
Look up Charles H Townes, he was an astrophysicist, a pioneer in telescopes and black hole research/discovery (also a friend of my family. ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_H._Townes
A "scale" would be beneficial in providing the ability to comprehend the size of the event. That goes for all the beautiful images of space events whose extent are difficult to grasp.
I need explainees: that’s not the visible spectrum, right? That’s some kind of tricky whosis sensor? Like if I flew out to space I would not see this? If so, what thingamabobs are we looking at here?
"Ascend the peak, on top of the stone arch; above the clouds, high in the starry night, the Three Sisters will greet you, wayfarer, and hear your wish."

Or is this 100% Hubble and no retouching?
(Still a crazy picture regardless)

Beyond magnificent. Complex beyond belief. Yes, one of the best! WOW!

And if you're NOT Christian, it's cool! The universe is still pretty damn amazing now matter what perspective one looks at it from!

No paparazzi please!
For me this image competes with the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula.
Both are stunning, it’s hard to choose which is more impressive.
