The current law involves giving an indirect free-kick in the penalty area for this offence. The existing law is sufficient, but referees just don't apply it. That's the problem, not the law.

Exactly. The only positive part about this change is the introduction of the clock, so fans can see when the ref starts it & then the 5 seconds. The corner part is an unnecessary change.

TBH do you think it’s fair to give an indirect kick in the box because the keeper delayed releasing the ball by a few seconds? That could even affect the credibility of the sport and not applying the rules is protecting the players from rules that are not fair/practical.

The existing law is neither unfair nor impractical. The reason goalkeepers continue to time waste is because referees don't sanction them. Sanction goalkeepers and they will stop offending.

I’d bet my house & home on not a single corner being awarded in the PL next season for a keeper holding the ball for longer than 8 seconds. The law is currently 6 seconds, yet keepers routinely hold the ball for 15+ seconds with no consequences

For those commenting, they’re showing a photo of Pickford because he’ll be the only person affected by this ruling. We all know this, no other keeper in the PL will be punished. They’ll make an example of Pickford & then the rule will be forgotten about & never applied again.
