This is educational for me, because I absolutely thought this and am glad to hear the contrary.
I lived in Georgia and Louisiana between 2009 and 2012 and all I ever heard was support for the conference in the bowl games. In eras where perception meant a title shot, conference hype really mattered.

I’m a UK fan, so barely in the SEC (football wise). I generally root for other SEC teams. With the exception of Louisville, UT and OSU are my least favorite fanbases. I thought I’d go conference pride last night, but it was immediately apparent I simply could not root for the Vols.

It was a southern pride thing 20 years ago when the conference was viewed differently. The 2005 “Michigan and OSU should have a rematch” sports talking head stuff set all that up. More about laughing at Big10 teams than “oh we actually root for our hated enemies”

I think it was real enough from 2006 through the end of the BCS. When the SEC champ almost missed the title game for 2 Big Ten teams it felt like there was a “rising tide lifts all boats” thing. But now, screw ‘em.

Yes. As far as fandom goes, the SCAR ones are ride or die and they have to be given how it usually plays out. I admit, I wanted them to get into the playoff, because I am not sure any other fan base deserves a happy little prize than they do.

A good chunk of “Root for the SEC” began in 2006 when Ohio State-Michigan was a huge deal and the ESPN Industrial Hot Take Complex spent weeks crying how absolutely unfair it was that those schools wouldn’t have a rematch. At a certain point it was like “OK Gators, go shut them up.”
