It’ll never be funny to me that one of the biggest companies in history lit itself on fire and burned through $100,000,000,000 trying to make something that pales in comparison to what bored and horny furries have built for free

Meta has spent over $100 billion on VR.

$100 billion. That's just not feasible, with NOTHING to show for it.
This is just painful to look at.
They bought ReadyAtDawn.
And Sanzaru.
And Armature.
Guess how many haven't released a single product since the buyout?
If meta feels the need to pull the plug, it will be really, really bad for us.
along the way, i can see why all those Tech-bros have been so desperate lately, most if not all of their projects have fallen apart and they are panicking that they may not have enough to sustain anything they own
That’s enough to pay 10,000 people to work for a decade
Are data centers THAT expensive??
Did they inflate contracts with friends?
They spent more each year than the total US box office of all movies combined
*A DECADE AGO*.
the original Luskwood Free avatars from second life look better than this!
And while that bit never took on, it's been a functional service for over 20 years!!
All it ever needs to be is a cool spot for people to hang out in ways that users want.
It does help that models in SL can look awesome though
Also in fairness it’s still a grossly inflated budget and the amount spent on Horizon Worlds still probably makes it a Concord level failure at this point.
Facebook employed John Carmack, lead programmer of Doom, he told them to make a product people would want to use instead of one corporations wanted, and they didn't listen to his feedback
Facebook wants to make a thing to make more money. That's it. That's the difference lol.
Hah! Just kidding. What kind of self-respecting furry would willingly work for Meta?
The most obvious cases like Meta VR get strongly rejected because they add no benefits or value in our lives.
A land of boundless excitement for anyone who thinks powerpoint slide transitions are a little too spicy for their constitution
Basically, what I imagine Hell must be like
The promise of VR was being someone else in an impossible space, able to break the limits of your meat shell. Zuck could never.
Thats like ten times worse
The $100B is mostly R&D and hardware. If you were to take that money out of the VR ecosystem it would be pretty apocalyptic.
Meta, conversely, has only one motivation that leaves no room for anything fun OR interesting
Also Apple, while Wozniak was still in play.
We have to stop making investment vehicles, it's the opposite of good tech governance to let a bunch of rich looters drive your business.
Even then I could build an avatar with functioning legs
The earliest art we know of is mostly:
a)Figures with highly exaggerated sexual characteristics.
b)Animal/human hybrids.
Sexy furries are the basis of all human culture.
that's their fault of making all the shitty decisions that arrive to what we are at now
But it also proves that you can't solve all problems and make people like something just by throwing huge amounts of money at it, which is encouraging to small devs like me.
at this point i'm just developing the better system UI for an XR OS and waiting for them to die, then I launch my stuff that's useful and fun.
if you're a fucking weirdo like me
you could pay someone to rig one of your Xbox Avatars and do shit like this
but like
holy shit even vrchat is doing better and VRC is the biggest sack of shit imaginable, like come on
hoping for an unreal engine based VRC someday
it’s crazy unreal has been around as long as it has and nobody has given vr a try.
my partner has been making an unreal game for years now and it runs like butter on their 1070… like come on 🤦
things are chill and the game is ran by a couple volunteers and it’s incredible.
it also works infinitely better than vrc does with 8 figures to work with 😂😭😭
vr's future looks bright
A shame Meta is such an awful company otherwise
the 3 seriously blew my mind and i was trying it side by side with the apple vision pro… only thing apple has an edge over them with is resolution/screen clarity… and that ain’t worth thousands more
100 player game on steam and they can be a big feral dog and literally eat objects and other people and me and see procedurally generated organs after being eaten
meta be like “omg we added legs 😍”
Still, I’m glad there’s a VR platform with working feral/quad avs!
my partner has been experimenting with a ton of things and resonite goes so deep compared to vrc it’s actually crazy. but it can be a bitch to set up in comparison
Zuckerberg's people do not.
