I keep saying this! But in San Francisco, unlike Santa Cruz, Berkeley, and lots of other places, we don’t yet have the advanced technology to allow this.
There are so many medians in this city with no trees in them... I have a hard time taking "what about the trees?!" NIMBYs seriously when they never, ever bring up we could plant literally thousands of trees in unused city owned land right now.
City of Seattle has some great resources for urban tree canopy. Seems to me that we need different zoning rules for different situations. This street just north of Maple Leaf Reservoir has few street trees bc of the sidewalks abuts the parking curb. Solution might be to make the street one-way. 1/2
Dayton Ave N is another street with little street canopy; census tract is 21% tree canopy. The area seems like a good place for housing in-fill. Developers should get credit for adding sidewalks and parking strips in order to increase FAR IMHO. One way streets are also a solution here. 2/2
I’ll never forget talking to someone in urban forestry here who said they once saw a tree block driver and car a from jumping a curb on to the sidewalk and hitting people. Trees. Nature’s bollards!
