My Icelandic publishers office is on the ground floor in a residential neighbourhood where there are a lot of house cats. And many, many of the cats who live in neighbouring houses "work" at my publishers during the day, i.e. sleep and eat at home but spend 8 hours at their office during the week. π§΅

The other day I was there for a marketing meeting and one of the cats was standing at the door to the bathroom staring very intently at us.
The marketing director: "Hmm, I wonder if he's OK."
Literary agent: "Maybe it's diabetes?"
Marketing director: "We should talk to its owners."
Me (joking): "Maybe you could just check his blood sugar?"
Me: "Really?!"
Literary agent: "Yes. She has a diabetic cat and has the thing. She often checks the cats that come here, if she thinks they start to look a bit under the weather. She has caught early diabetes in at least three cats."
My publisher is moving offices soon, so the cats will have to find another place to work. But the good news is that there are some stray cats living near their new offices, and I am looking forward to seeing how things progress there.
