What do you use for a browser?
I've been using Edge because it was the only mainstream one with ublock and vertical tabs, but I was thinking of switching back to FireFox now that it has native vertical tabs.
Are there any better choices?
There are so many criticisms I could launch about various interfaces from apps to browsers. A term that’s been cropping up that I find useful is “enshitification.” It so perfectly describes Google’s search engine architecture, AI, and a host of others, a cornucopia of enshitification.
Waiting for AI Powered tabs where it sift through millions of tabs the user has opened. “I’m pretty sure I left this one tab open before can you fetch it for me” 🙃😂
This is the same reasoning why I want to see the Windows taskbar to be movable! I prefer it on the right! One of the reasons I haven't moved to win11 yet.
I use an extension which closes tabs automatically if they've not been in use. I could close them myself, I know I never switch back to older tabs, but what if there is a 0.01% chance I want to check something there? You never know.
I've tried to get into using vertical tabs several times. Can't seem to get past my brain going "this is wrong - this is very wrong - where are we right now?"
I have more than 8-10 tabs open, I close the browser and start over, because if I have that many tabs, it's usually an indication that I lost my train of thought and I need to reset.
Btw, if anyone else is a tab hoarder like me - reminder than in Edge and other chromium base browsers, pressing CTRL + SHIFT + A will bring up a searchable list of all your tabs, and the ones playing audio/media will be at the top
Before you start sharing your screen: Ctrl + L, Shift + Enter will open the current URL in a new Egde window; so, no one can see you have more than one tab open 😉
I am wishing I could open different instances of Edge or aother browser where one is nothing but monitoring, one is nothing but Jira, one is reserach/general browsing
If there was a way to turn off tab display altogether and force use of CTRL+SHIFT+A, I'd do it. Horizontal, vertical, it's all a waste if I'm going to visually scan them every time (like I do) when I know name/FQDN of the one I want.
I keep them horizontal, but distributed to like 30 browser windows with 5 to 20 tabs each. And usually after a couple weeks I forgot why I opened them in the first place and then just start closing them.
Wish I could have them horizontal, but bump out for vertical text so all my "stuff to read later" looks
