I erroneously believed that HCWs weren’t permitted to proactively suggest MAiD. I assumed the patient had to make the request.

I went home and researched and sure enough - they are actually encouraged to bring it up.

Not only in terminal patients - but in those with disabilities as well /4

I’m so glad. That was the case in Canada when we first legalized assisted dying - but with the expansion to non terminal illnesses they started encouraging doctors to bring it up.

The argument it is that it’s part of informed consent - but I don’t agree. It felt awful when they said it to me

We are not going down the non-terminal route. The Legislation is very rigid. It would take a lot to alter it. I doubt many providers would acquiesce. I wouldn't.

Thankfully I’ve only had a few doctors bring it up - most of my doctors are amazing and are genuinely trying to help despite our system being really broken.

But others haven’t been so fortunate - and as you can imagine if you’re marginalized, poor and/or alone you face a bigger battle

In Victoria (AUS) the doctors are not allowed to raise the VAD (MAID) conversation. It has to be patient initiated.
I'm sorry it was put to you in that manner when there are treatment options. They should expedite treatment options first. Geez.

I’m not saying people don’t have the right to choose when they die - but please understand how awful it is to go to a hospital for care - have a treatable condition - and be asked “would you like to die instead?”

Yes! Even when I share my story I’m told I’m wrong and it’s not happening and I want people to suffer. I don’t want anyone to suffer - but we can’t deny reality either. This program is harming disabled people and other programs could follow suit.

I think most who argue for this service in good faith see the downsides as far less dramatic and widespread than they are. A lot of them seem to think its worth the cost, because they fail to understand how poorly treated we are by insurance already.

That is so wrong we are acact opposite here in Australia with Doctors etc forbidden to mention it. Elderly People I know revere Doctors & do everything they say including multiple tests & specialists am sure not needed. Why see Oncologist if no cancer??? They would just agree sadly 😿😿😿

Same in America. My mom was 80 with stage 4 cancer, and had to fight to get a terminal diagnosis, so she could qualify. "Technically, it's treatable". Fortunately for her, her children are pushy.

Want when breast fungating. Definitely terminal still enjoying life but exhaustion more every day. Saw Palliative Doctor (not part of my team) last week wants put me on Drug Trial🤯🤯 Have been way past that for a year.

Wow Kelly, I'm so sorry! Even if the theory is good, in practice there are so many bad doctors. I have EDS too and probably will want to choose how things end but not b/c some Dr doesn't want to bother advocating for appropriate treatment. I hope you never have to see that provider again.
