For Independent Bookstore Day (tomorrow!), I’m happy to tout my new (for me) local bookshop, Small World Books, right on the Venice boardwalk. It’s swell.

I’m off to purchase Book and Dagger: How Scholars and Librarians Became the Unlikely Spies of World War II tomorrow at my favorite independent bookstore! Thanks @melissaf.bsky.social for the recommendation! I liked the book so much from the library that I want my own copy.
Oh wow, I was just swept back in time, back when I lived in Santa Monica. I remember those sunny brunches with friends at the Sidewalk Café in the '80s, followed by carefree afternoons spent roller skating. Those moments felt so full of life—simple, joyful, and unforgettable.
Huntington used to have Oscar's & Book Revue (I think Book Revue still operates but not out of a storefront), and in Stony Brook, The Corner Bookstore - plus a lot more little no-name joints I used to prowl regularly that mostly closed up when Borders & Barnes & Noble opened their white elephants.
I got some real good stuff from an 8th St store, don't remember its name. They used to have book carts & tables in Washington Square Park, too. (For all I know, they still do -- haven't been to the city in ages).
Our local bookstore in Mission, British Columbia, Canada (right). On the left is the new location opening across the river in Abbotsford, BC. Great staff. Ask for Ami. She's the awesomest.
It's a wonderful book store. If you ever get up the coast, go to Timbre in Ventura. It's newish, run by a lovely young couple, and really doing wonderful things for the community.
It’s also a location in a really terrific & prescient movie not nearly enough people have watched: Southland Tales. When my good friend first described Southland Tales to me, my response was simply: There’s no way what you’re describing is a real movie, especially one I haven’t heard of. But it is!
Sam Lotson’s , Greensburg, Indiana, and Pittsburgh, PA. Fully Self service Veteran owned. 4buck HC , 2 buck PB. Free coffee, water, and reading lounge.
Hey, I know this might seem a little silly, but I do this little online election on Twitter. I don't know, Twitter, gross, right? And we really need help getting Democrats to win because the Republicans in the game are cheating!
Dude lmao my brother's old place was like 20 steps away from there. I didn't realize you were that local! One of my favorite stops. Get the Korean fish tacos at that place next to the basketball courts if you haven't yet.
I didn't know you were local either! We're Eastsiders and don't get out to Venice much (but I'll plug our local indie, North Figueroa Bookshop). Last time we were out there was on a staycation where we had an epic evening: dinner at Scopa Italian Roots, drinks afterward in the back at Old Lightning.
I tend to cook at home at least five nights a week, and given traffic-distance it’s quite an effort to get out there. A friend of mine refers to these local distances as “nine-double-oh-too-far.” 😆
If you haven’t been there yet I highly recommend John O’Groats on Pico in West LA for breakfast and lunch. I’ve been a regular there for 36 years and it’s one of my happy places.
Everything there is good, but my go-to is their club sandwich, which raises that sandwich to an art form.

If not have a good day!!1!
(Shockingly, we've been cooking far more often than not, so we still have a lot of restaurants to explore.)
Outstanding central American food
Also the best coffee in all of LA is Menottis on Windward!

I accept your response sadly.
It's a required stop on every trip to LA.
Then I zoomed in on the sign! 😂😂
Lived two blocks away in the 80's-90's.
