I need to actually get around to playing that game. People kept telling me “no this one is actually good” and that’s just not what I want out of a David Cage game.
gameplay itself can be artistic imho, a truly well-designed system can induce a 'pure' aesthetic experience detached from narrative in the same way that furniture or architecture can. slay the spire for instance
(this, the same guy's CoD WaW video, and his SWAT 4 video live in my head rent-free at all times and genuinely changed the way how I look at the whole 'games as art' framing)
I agree, but I feel like that form of aesthetic experience is almost always emergent rather than intentional, a side effect of designing a game that is fun and engaging to play
