The thing about this that absolutely kills me is that this will only embolden Republicans to stuff *even worse* stuff in future spending bills, knowing that there are enough Dems who will vote yes on cloture no matter what.

I am buying Schumer's explanation. I think Trusk (or is it Mump?) wanted a shut down and would have used it for deeper and more widespread destruction. Chuck's op-ed in today's NYT convinced me.
This has been every single Republican policy position for the last 20 years. We need a Democratic Party that sees Republicans as the fucking fascist garbage humans they are and tells them to fuck off every time they want our votes.
What gets me is the condescending “people will be hurt by the shutdown” line. We know. And so many are willing to endure that because we are under attack *now* and it will only get worse. The status quo is not something worth preserving. If they don’t get that, they should resign.
This ⬆️ 💯. If these 9 Dems couldn’t even get this right then they are not strong enuf for what’s to come. We don’t need weak, feckless pussies on the front lines we need fighters ✊
Those Democratic Senators can just not show up for work and actually get paid, unlike those Trump accused of doing so that will now permanently lose their jobs because of those spineless Democrats.
well this funds the govt through September, and that budget bill will be done via reconciliation I believe and so I don't think there even is cloture for this stuff on deck anytime soon? idk might be wrong but that's my understanding
Yep, it was pure cowardice and wanting to hide. As there was one and only one legit reason to vote for cloture, yet there is a 0% chance any of these cowards had it as a reason.
This is exactly it. Aside from the outcome, it’s just terrible negotiating to announce on national television that you’ll basically do anything to avoid a shutdown. It’s basically a blank check for the future for absolutely no political gain. Imbecilic leadership from a strategy vacuum
The cowardice blows my mind. I just don't know how we survive even the next year at the rate this is going. I feel like I'm losing my mind, like nothing makes sense. How is it possible that all of this illegal and illicit garbage is happening, and people just shrug it off?!
The lack of a coordinated opposition to the CR accelerates the slide away from Democracy. I do not understand how two Jewish senators did not get this.

The biggest mistake the Republicans made was pushing the next deadline out to September. Should have just done it every 30 days and get whatever they want every month.
That would have played too much in the Dems favor, too much actual leverage to block the agenda, consistent public outrage and they might not actually cave the next month
It speaks to just how bad the Democrats have been at this for, well, since at least the open Supreme Court position in the last year of the Obama administration, if not longer.
And they will be able to pass that one under reconciliation because if the parliamentarian says they can't the Republicans will just fire them and ask the next one.
Thinking that the Dems are going to put up a fight has been thoroughly demolished today. I think everyone was hoping that somewhere, sometime they would show a little backbone.
I'm afraid they are a lost cause. They are every bit as greedy and cowardly as a lot of people in the GOP.
They’re gambling with people’s lives on the hopes that maybe, just maybe, enough Republicans will come to their senses in a year or two. And they’re not prepared for what happens if they lose their bet.
And we know for a fact they won't stand up no matter what because Schumer literally said he won't stand up to Trump until the GOP does. And he knows perfectly fucking well that's never happening.
Many people may find this shocking, but the best strategy in dealing with a tyrant is resolute defiance. The worst strategy is mild appeasement in a vain hope you won’t be noticed.
The Republicans in Congress are weapons of Trump. There will be NO future bills if Trump gets any excuse, like the emergency power under government shutdown, to suspend Congress.
Musk and Trump need to be fired before they succeed in their firing of us and our Constitution.

As bad as this one is, the next one will be magnitudes worse and include all sorts of horrors.

Because if everything was good and normal, how would they even fundraise?
The call volume and protests against the Dems calm down to focus on more pressing issues
Then rinse & repeat

Ten Democrats voted for cloture - Judenratë shitheads just sold us out to the Nazis
