Overheard in the music section of a Barnes and Noble: “I’ve had it with this bebop horseshit” and I respect you, time traveling jazz purist from the 1940s.

Wow you read? What’s it like? I used to go to Union Square when Bill Clinton gave us a story of glory
After Bill I stopped reading. Do you still cruise poetry and self help? Barnes and Noble was like Ashley Madison.
Zipless Fridays. Chicks like words. Don’t blame me
En réalité, a time traveling *chain* bookstore* customer from a Tuesday in 1999. Will he ever find his way home? Will he ever get ‘Night in Tunisia’ out of his head?
Was totally in the jazz scene in the late 80s and some girls came to our house party and said "Why are you listening to jazz" to which my friend Mucci replied "Why aren't you?"
A lot of Gil Evans best work came in the early 60's. How can you listen to "Out Of The Cool" and think it's dead. That's completely absurd. Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock and so many more blossomed between 1960 and 1970. Great stuff and certainly nothing dead about it.
I adore Gil Evans' work. I saw Freddie Hubbard play before he died. Herbie Hancock is still puting potholes in the game. Lee Morgan was a genius and Jackie McClean had an incredible tone. I suggest you read it again.
Great read...I hear what he's saying...I'll settle with post modern Nola vibe...from Cory Henry to Christian McBride, Nasheet Waits, etc...call it good music!
Thanks for sharing that article. I don’t agree it’s dead but I do resonate with this part: “The very fact that so many people are holding on to this idea of what Jazz is supposed to be is exactly what makes it not cool.” Too many people asking “is this jazz?” in lieu of enjoying the music…
Can ‘jazz purists’ actually claim to be ‘jazz purists’, when the beauty of haz is the freedom to improvise and create new paths, sounds, rythyms, genres, of jazz!
One may prefer a certain ‘style’ or ‘genre’, but- it’s jazz!!!
