I thought I’d try to teach myself to crochet, nice relaxing hobby. I have been at it and watching videos for an hour and now I’m so frustrated I want to burn down my house 😃

Okay but some of the videos jump in a bit too early, I've crocheted for a little bit and they even stump me. Definitely start with a wooble kit or something similar!!! (I would only get 1 or 2 tho cause once you've done one you've p much done most of them)
They suggested that to my bestie when she was pregnant to lower her blood pressure and keep her calm but it made everything worst cause she was always getting frustrated ahah 😂 I want to learn too thoo it seems fun and you can do such cute things !
I tried crochet first and about lost my mind. Tried knitting and picked that up easier for some reason. Then went back a year or so later and learned crochet. Some people just find one easier than another at first!
When I started I learned just the chain stitch and the single crochet and made myself a lil scarf. Stick with the simplest thing and do that until your hands get used to the movements! Everything else will come so much easier once you have the muscle memory. 💕
Try looking at tutorials like this: https://youtu.be/CByEVGk26EE?si=X-xOjIqLeHZvyjsu
Once you find a comfortable position, your hands will start remembering how to hand again, especially if you go slow and take your time.
I'm the same. I've never been able to hold yarn, project, and needle the way you see in pictures. I made my own way, it's comfortable to me and works. The more you crochet you will figure out what works for you.
Starting is the hardest part! I found it really hard to teach myself and ended up getting a Wooble kit. it definitely helped make everything just click for me
I hope you can keep going,; it's worth it! It can be a great way to learn patience, how to love yourself when you're messing up, and how to (eventually) make nice things. 💜
A tip: I have a friend who says UK crochet is very different from North American crochet - the stitches have different names and it can be very confusing. So check your learning source and watch where any patterns are from, just to avoid confusion (stick with one!). Good luck!
thank you!!!! imo plushies are more fun because they take less patience/smaller- look up “amigurumi” if you’re interested :) mostly uses single crochet and working from a little circle
Don't give up! Acquiring any skill takes practice. Start with 'granny squares' and if you know anyone who knows how, have them show you in person. Good luck ❤️
I haven’t intentionally learned a new craft like this in a long time and my frustration is always very self-destructive (like I want to bang my head against the wall but literally) and so I had to put it down.
Agree! granddaughter had Wooble kit and i helped her watch videos (used my phone) and watched her work through it. Refreshed my limited skills that I learned from my grandma in the 70’s
So much fun! Well done kits! ♥️
What really helped me was slowing down the videos and pausing a lot. My first project was far from perfect, but I learned and that's all that was important
This book is hard to find, but excellent. It’s how I taught myself to crochet. The videos are always too fast for me. I need to see a picture. https://a.co/d/0vhFA4A
A book with pictures helps. You can do so much with just a few variations of basically same stitch. It's getting used to the left hand as much as the hook but you'll get it. Maybe start with some practice squares vs a project. Good luck!
When you get more comfortable you can move up to more complex stuff. Honestly, if you know how to do a chain, a double crochet, and a skip stitch, you can make a whole bunch of things
Hi, I was lucky. My mom taught me to knit and crochet. I would encourage you to find a local yarn/knitting store (not a large box store). Most small yarn stores love to teach crochet and knitting. You could probably even find a fun group of peeps to hang out with and crochet.
Decades ago I was doing the same (before YT) and my young son asked why I was doing that. Told him it was supposed to be relaxing. He stared for a bit and said, “Yah, I don’t think so. Maybe they lied.” 😂. I crochet every chance I get now - it does get better!
I started knitting a couple of years ago in my late '40s, all I can say is stick with it. All the research I've read says that learning a new manual skill is excellent for brain health.
I know that feeling! Once you get past the early frustration, it's super satisfying to make something beautiful. Plus it gives me a reason to take "me time" in this crazy busy world. Wishing you good luck!
Yeeeaah, I did the same with knitting. All I did was tie up my own hands in knots. Then a friend told me they can teach monkeys how to knit so I could learn too. Anyway. I still cant knit. 🤣💀
I can help! Here’s some of the things I’ve made
The frogs and ducks are my first few tries at it and it starts a bit frustrating, but as you practice you do get better and better! The blanket isn’t done and there’s a lot of mistakes but I think it’s still a really good try
you will get the hang of it i promise. Just make sure to start with basic chains, don't try make a granny square straight away.

I probably should have gotten my MiL to teach me.

Craft and a cuppa is also excellent. Between these two I’ve gone from zero to cardigan.
