axios is owned by Cox Enterprises, a global telecom and media conglomerate controlled by the billionaire oligarch Cox family. it's no surprise their news outlets lie
Perhaps when they are loaded on the buses will the journalists and their editors start calling this what it is. They think they are last in line, but they’re closer to the front than they realize.
That is a dictatorship trying to silence free speech, free press & the right to protest. Their immigration crackdown is an distraction, a violation of due process to be sure, but Trump & Co are testing boundaries towards an oligarchy.
Considering Trump has some kind of deal with forced labor camps, not prisons, yeah. This isn't about immigration. It's about making anyone he doesn't like disappear into slavery outside the US so he can pretend he's not responsible for selling people or incarcerating them without trial.
This is Fascism. Trump is not much different then Hitler (although Hitler was better looking and way smarter). Trumps cabinet are all Nazi's, check out Pete's tattoos and ICE is the modern Nazi SS. Tom Homan is a racist moron. All the GOP knows is hate and to hurt as many people as posible.
not holding journalism accountable for the words they publish is profoundly dangerous. public perception is cultuvated by the media, and if it is not explicit in its opposition to fascism it is complicit in its conception

Well, people are less likely to immigrate to economically stagnant and repressive countries, so I guess Mr Trump is just playing 4D Immigration Chess here
No wonder he likes Putin so much and is such a fan of Stalin! This is laughably ridiculous but his party are the only ones who can give him a hook and, even with this madness, they are unlikely to do it
Oh no, it's not that...bold move in a Country full of guns needed (according to 2nd Amendment and NRA), to avoid tyranny...but then perhaps, just perhaps, Supreme Court may rely on other, slightly less extreme things like 5th Amendment to protect you all....but you're half way there.
I didn't know that criticizing policies of the president (i.e. Donald J. Trump) was illegal. Did Trump indicate what law or section of the Constitution supports this? I kind of thought the freedom of speech provisions would make it impossible for him to do this.
He believes Article II lets him do what he wants. And it's only impossible until his personally-appointed flunky AG refuses to enforce a court order telling him to stop.
"Charging anyone...who criticizes Trump's policies". So this is somehow normal? What exactly would they be charged with, have they instituted a new law by executive order?
You're thinking of repatriation. Technically, deportation is just expulsion from the country. We could send them to international waters and it would still be deportation.
Whether it's legal or right doesn't change the definition of the word.
Expedited removals don't go before judges. It used to be limited to the 100mi zone within two weeks of entry, but as of January it's now two years anywhere in the country. And the burden of proof for 2+ yrs residence is on the detainee, so effectively it's now everyone.
Who knows if anyone they have kidnapped was documented or not? We don’t - no one was given their due process. Instead, this regime goes with “guilty until I am willing to accept you *might* be innocent” - the exact opposite of due process.
I get that...the point I was trying to make it rather than identifying undocumented migrants, what they're actually doing is finding people that are here legitimately and revoking their legal status. I don't think they're actually trying to find undocumented people (due process violation aside).
also you should reconsider whatever wonky moral compass is telling you some people don't deserve fundamental human rights bc they don't have the right papers. everyone who is accused of a crime has a right to a fair trial
eh, I'm sorry for assuming!
been seeing a lot of takes that basically amount to "well this is fine as long as it's only happening to a certain kind of person" and i am perhaps a bit too reactive to any hint of that rn
yeah, i mean, these are wild awful fuckin times and we are all thoroughly on edge but I still would rather not direct my frustrations at ppl who don't deserve it
Never surprised that a paper founded by ex-politicos was acquired by a family of billionaires and handed to a fourth generation of nepotism and just churns out endless right wing viewpoints
Right. It's not like the journalists responsible for this don't know this is something else entirely. It just never occurs to them that they could simply ... not adopt a false characterization.
Because we constantly say "journalist" or "reporter."
If we wish to make change we must name and shame the people doing the things we want changed or else we are just farting into the wind.
This is how democracy dies: strip people of their ability to protest government policies. Control the media, the message, education and silence or disappear the opposition. Drumpf and Project 2025 are following The Handmaids’ Tale like it was a playbook.

Officials wanting to see criticism of officials. or criticism of policies, to be criminalized should be asked to resign immediately, as that is an abuse of power violating the First Amendment that is being suggested which can only lead to even greater abuse of power against American citizens.

Incumbent and way past time.

I was correcting the OP who said it isn't deportation unless you send them somewhere they have citizenship, which is not true.

It's a pretty safe bet that the first round of renditions was just a trial run.
