I'm not usually this guy but it's a case of the needs of the next movie doing damage to the current one. They've achieved this underdog team but the villain tricks them into selling out in one second because that's what the next one's apparently about. (Enjoyed the movie overall though.)

I feel like it works enough in the context of "Okay, maybe this now?" for most of these people, who've spent a lot of their lives being mercenaries and/or stateless/rootless with only temporary situations. It's a "needs of plot" thing, but I think there's a solid degree of texture around the idea...

...that the ENTIRE "world structure" is basically a flipped rental held together by flexglue and bad promises in the movie itself by that point that it goes with the finish re: "THESE are the ____? Nah." / "Okay but maybe we can fake it until they make us leave?" as a vibe.

Like they've been building "Yes, we KNOW you were never going to like what we did after 'Endgame' as much and everyone misses The Avengers" as their metastory since that second 'Spider-Man' now all that's left is to have it all blow up again. Maybe it works? 🤷‍♂️

I see what you’re saying but it works in my opinion. This crew all want to be heroes, Avengers even, and they already work in the grey so this compromise is not a big lift. Yelena’s aside to Elaine was enough for me to recognize they will be taking agency in future missions.

I think the fact that they wanted to be applauded and respected by the way after years of doing horrible things in the shadows was the main factor. And Yelena’s line at the end basically says “we will call the shots” knowing they have dirt on her

If it was just the spy/assassin characters, I could buy it as them seizing power, knowing their options are limited (like THE SUICIDE SQUAD’s ending). Bucky being there sort of ruins it though. Why would he not just order her arrest, like he’s been pursuing the whole movie?

They have her by the throat, and get everything. They don't think like conventional heroes. They're a wetworks team. Compromise and leverage is everything. Much more in character, especially once we see what the new boyscout with a shield has assembled.

Let's set aside "Is there an explanation for why they would do this?" and consider "Is this an exciting thing for these characters to be doing next?" For me the answer is no, huge downgrade.

It felt to me like they had just learned the lesson that they didn't need that, it was not what they were missing. It's a movie about them feeling unfulfilled because of the evil work they do, and then they agree to still do it in exchange for fame, but it plays as a happy ending.

I saw it as "well now they have the good-guy name, and are being sent on good-guy missions" vs just "kill this guy that Elaine wants dead"

so they sorta got what they wanted, with a catch

It's also what they always aspired to, and it's always the character arc. John wants to be Cap. Yelena wants to be her big sister. Alexi wants to be recognized as a real hero, not a Cold War footnote. Bucky is still trying to work out how to serve. Ghost is finally seeing her power as not a curse.
