Most women work in lower paying traditional gender roles, they don’t complete with men.

I mean sure but the fact of the matter is that men without college degrees are making less money than they were 40 years ago. Most guys (not all) without a college diploma aren't going to make what they'd make with one, unless they're going into a very specific trade. That's just what the data says.

So much of the pay gap for college degrees isn't because college degrees are truly needed for jobs it's because you get screened out of job competitions for not having one regardless of what your skills are. It's discrimination.

sadly men will not enter any trade dominated by women because it will always be seen as "lesser", which is what's happening to college right now. More women go--> it becomes devalued. The only reason some trade jobs are as well-paid as they are now is because they are hugely dominated by men.

I was unsurprised by the data because I’ve worked with in the trades for 20 years with many guys who never got diplomas and anecdotally it seems like their circumstances have gotten worse.

I mean it seems interesting that the gap between male and female wage changes is largest at the lowest levels of education. my intuition would've been that those jobs simply don't have much wage variance, and equality would manifest as compositional shifts, rather than wage ones.

Lower education jobs can have large wage variance, based on unionization or other factors. Decline of unions and higher paid manufacturing jobs might be a big part of the men's wage decline.

My intuition is that at lower education levels, it’s more expected for women to do unpaid care and domestic labor so in order for them to seek paid work, it needs to be better paid to feel worth it. Men in the same situation are more pressured to have paid work, less pressured to pitch in at home.

that's my intuition as well but my expectation is that wouldn't necessarily show up as "growth in women's wages". if one woman makes $10/hour as a cashier and four women do childcare/housework, that's the same average wage as if they all work as cashiers for $10/hour

My point, unless I’m parsing this wrong, is that because of social expectations of unpaid care work, women would be less incentivized to take a $10/hour job at all, because their family members (spouses, grandparents, parents) are more willing to support them. But $16? Maybe worth it.

Doesn't seem that way in construction. Drivers overall are making less, but there were some very bad employers even in the 70s, 80s. Wonder how this breaks down by race. In states where Black men dominated certain jobs, the wages used to be extremely low.
