TLDR- he's a narcissist, who is doing fascism stuff very fast. David Brooks doesn't like the "he's doing fascism" but he does like the "very fast" piece.
Also he's just patently wrong on the history. LBJ did a ton right off the bat. Hell, even W Bush did a lot, allowing Rumsfeld to orchestrate an overhaul of DoD that resulted in a ton of problems once we tried to actually fight a war lol
Also, fuck you David Brooks, it's shit like this that makes people think that actually legislating and working within the system is weak (see, all of Biden's legislation)
To some degree he's not wrong, aside from the gross fauning adoration. The contrast of the democrats mostly shrugging and sighing, or the left (bless our hearts) struggling to unite against constant external fracturing, versus the uninhibited steamroller destruction of fascism is pretty intense.
Shrugging, sighing, holding huge rallies, holding town halls where the GOP are no-shows, taking the administration to court, visiting a gulag in El Salvador where people are being disappeared, appearing on almost any show that will book them to excoriate the GOP. All the same.
Ugh, he's not wrong, though. Can you imagine energized Democratic Representatives? We've seen some resistance and Trump gets defensive. Can you imagine a full throated, energized opposition party?
“I am a spirited man. I am not a compassionate man. When I stopped looking for any kind of consent in the women I have sex with and just started raping them, if is truly amazing how many hot babes I got to bang.”
Yeah its almost as though if you are only going to smash, break, destroy things without thought, logic, restraint or obeying any law but your own it's easier. Who'd have thought.
Precisely. I think there's a middle ground between "crush everything in six weeks" and "spend four years watching your enemies rally while you scratch your head"
I think he's still trying to inspire a gen strike"History is filled with examples of passionate minorities seizing power over disorganized &passive majorities:[names a bunch of leftist revolutions] they possessed superior boldness, decisiveness & clarity of purpose." He's just...David brooks
"While I regret the calamitous descent of our aircraft towards the unforgiving mountains below, upon which we shall surely perish, the colors of the flames spewing from our engines are really quite lovely."
I've often wondered over the years, upon reading or listening to Brooks, how someone so dense and superficial, can rise to that level of prestige. Brooks is not just an empty suit, he's a fucking vacuum.
I mean, how is he any better or worse than half the punditry class other than being Republican? You could swap the byline with something like Jonathan Chait or Matt Yglesias and I wouldn't even think twice.
"I, for one, abhor the brutal authoritarian crackdown. But I cannot help but admire the cuts of their jibs as they jauntily crack the skulls of those who resist!"

...But it is true that I wish the Biden and previous Dem administrations had been more energetic, relentless, and willing to commit to big swings.

In Brooks case, he really seems behind the curve even more than most 'pundits'.
But Trump is achieving this speed by ignoring laws and inviting lawsuits.
Bulls in china shops don't slow down for china, that's the point.
Speed is IMPRESSIVE, yes, but the outcomes matter, too. Speed for the sake of speed doesn't necessarily solve more problems than it creates.
