Appointing her as Environment Minister was pure vindictiveness. And his killing this deal makes it fully clear he wanted her to fail at it by being forced only to approve new mines.
Petty, student politics shite by a bloke a majority of voters will not miss when he goes.
It's part of the ridiculousness of party politics: she and he have adjacent electorates and same faction, so leadership/deputy role is a zero-sum game. Seems personal too, after her support for Shorten.
Net effect: he has damaged one of Labor's best assets.
Genius move by the long-term strategist!
I'm going to focus on 'ridiculousness of party politics' & the absurdity of what govt has mutated into. How any of this can be seen by anyone as 'what's in the national interest' is 🤯
All well explained here people:
what are you talking about, he squeaked over the line with a WA result he had nothing to do with and is going to get rinsed next year. he's proven adept at becoming leader of the labor party and literally not one other thing
Plibersek would have done better to go the backbench and wait Albanese out. She'd be the front-runner for leadership next year, after the great three-term strategy fails.
Shorten did a good job, and so has Burke. Chalmers has done about as well as he could, I guess. After that, Andrew Leigh who's only an assistant minister. Then a string of disappointments or active wrongdoers - Albo himself, Marles, Plibersek, Rowlands, Madeleine King, Dreyfus, Wong, many more.
I liked Shorten and thought he would have made a good PM. But I don't know that he did a good job in this government. He has left the NDIS an enormous mess.
I want to believe that Tanya will be a great future leader but I've been so disappointed by most who reach the top. Gillard was one. She was an excellent negotiator and got deals done, but she listened to the polls rather than her heart (except on Ss marriage). Would Tanya be different?

Somehow he overrode that.
