i continue to believe pretty strongly that enabling people to live in ways that permanently eliminate virtually all material concerns from their lives breaks politics and representative government, and that representative government must counterattack those conditions to ensure it's own survival

just fundamentally disconcerting to learn one lives in a world where tons of powerful people behave in ways that aren't aligned with any form of rational self-interest or even understandable irrational self-interest, but it also means trying to foresee the future just can't be your thing

And before anyone asks, no you cannot have some of what I'm smoking
easy to say that when you can throw money and make literally every concern disappear and focus entirely on work! not so much when you have to wash your own dishes!
Evidence in many countries shows this to be the case, as policy becomes less materially focused. The US is currently...not doing that.
I can live with that.
Also nice thing for the US is our citizenship based tax laws mean they can’t just leave the country and avoid it.
But they're also easier to divide through carrots and sticks of policy.
Any Dem political economy needs to account for this. If you carve out good billionaires and bad billionaires and make them fight,
If you don't, you end up with a broad swath the capitalist feeling threatened, and they coordinate to pool their wealth and capture the state away from you.
and Season 2 feels like slop even though the beats had good meet and bones but somehow it became less than the sum of the pieces
Mind, I don't. Everyone wants to harp on the billionaire idiots, but not the millionaire and thousandaire ones we're surrounded by. It wasn't a lack of material stresses that got people into QAnon and the like.

We see it a bit in The Player Of Games before they whisk the bored cheater away to go cheat at games for foreign policy ends instead.
