I'm OK with this kind of stuff if it's behind accessibility options or maybe treated the way PS5s largely unused hints system worked. Don't be like Navi, popping up and giving me unwanted advice.
You could probably make a video out of this, it's just like checking guides but now it's an energy sinkhole with the sole purpose of backseating gamers that are too afraid of fucking around and finding about
Like, guides are fine for those who need them, but it's yet another bad implementation of LLMs made to take more data from the user that in turn will probably confuse players more than aid them
There's so much wrong with AI but the thing that really gets to me is just why anyone finds the idea of outsourcing their thinking is appealing. Tired of having thoughts and opinions? Try AI!
I swear these people who are so gung-ho about AI in everything are just TRYING to become the blandest husks possible.
The only way I can put it is like it's a weird form of self-dehumanization, they don't value any of their own ability to do basic human tasks and decisions.
I wonder if it's an attractive prospect if you really fear failure. If you rely on an AI to decide things for you, then you can never truly fail. It was the AI failing you.
Again though a life without experiencing failure is as you say a bland husk of one.
literally just had this same conversation with someone yesterday! i was browsing the playstore for a new goal and task manager and an obscene number of them are trying to hook people with outsourcing... deciding your OWN GOALS AND TASKS?? TO AN AI???
Definitely a huge fan of AI getting needlessly shoehorned into all kinds of places that nobody asked it to be. How would anyone enjoy playing a game like this...
"If you purchase this season's battle pass for only $9.99, the motivation to acquire new skins may improve your win rate. You may also see improvements in performance that can help you react to opponents if you upgrade to the Xbox Series X for only $499. Shall I open the Microsoft Store now?"
What kills me is there is such a wealth of advice and knowledge on games built by their communities
Instead of using AI or building tools to make that knowledge accessible in games, these companies are using AI to replace that knowledge with a pale imitation that's just confidently wrong
and the AI will completely break down if/when its implementation overwhelms existing communities. Already, tons of online walkthroughs are just scraped from the handful of people that actually write them
Dude, I worked on extensive launch review coverage of Stalker 2 and the amount of guides/walkthroughs I found that were just AI recreations of things people with early access had done was unreal. I didn't realize the depth of the AI "game guide" sites until that project. It's insane.
The few times I've done PvP, I had my best success when I threw all the doctrines, min-max builds, tactics and methods out the window in favor of doing insane stuff that nobody expected.
Peak was when said new idea got banned because it worked and other players couldn't adapt to it.
This is meant to trick investors into thinking Microsoft is doing big stuff with the hot new technology. It isn't meant to be something people actually want to use
What infuriates me the most is that you don't need an AI for that, a decades old expert system can provide that kind of advice for a fraction of resources
"Xbox, I just heard someone scream a slur in this lobby. Unfortunately, my over-reliance on AI to do all of my critical thinking has shrunk my brain. Should I report them?"
Meanwhile at From Software: "guys Elden Ring is pretty big, I think we should give players a map for once."
Miyazaki: "okay FINE but I'm adding two more poison swamps, deal with it."
Asking the AI what to do in a competitive video game and getting absolutely wrecked in the actual gameplay, then wondering if the AI can just play the game for me too
Another creator I follow had a video recently that went into the idea that not only are people uninterested in finding answers for themselves but that they don't *want* to find answers if they aren't handed to them by some algorithm or, I guess, AI. This seems to reinforce this idea :(
Once upon a time, GameFAQs had plaintext ad-free guides and discussion boards, and if one guide had bad info you could check any of the other guides...
Can't wait to be playing a game, stop for a quick drink of water or just look away for .5 seconds and get a pop-up saying "Hey, looks like you need a hint! Have you tried-" it's going to be so much fun........

Kinda disturbs me.

-¿have you tried getting good sir?
The industry: I got ya.
(the industry didn't actually got anything at all)
Instead of using AI or building tools to make that knowledge accessible in games, these companies are using AI to replace that knowledge with a pale imitation that's just confidently wrong
But these corporations are just using it to exploit that effort and make everything worse

From the blog post
"Note: Copilot in-game assistance videos featured in the podcast are product concepts only."
They thought how to apply gen AI in games and this is the best they came up with?
(/s, since it’s not obvious anymore these days. 🥲)
me: im already tracer
Miyazaki: "okay FINE but I'm adding two more poison swamps, deal with it."
Claim: AI analyzes and provides info
Reality: AI does a google search
When i look at character select in a QP match in Rivals i just pick whatever i vibe with (or in the case of ranked think what fits the comp).
Sounds very, lets say it nicely, "unfun" to play like this.
