I was very confused one time about 15 years ago when a song came on the radio that I thought was a cover of Dreams by The Corrs. It took a moment to join the dots when my workmate said it was Fleetwood Mac. I'd never knowingly heard any of their songs before.
I hear you. For 40 or so years I believed that Mama Cass died by choking on a ham sandwich and that Jane (Jayne?) Mansfield was beheaded in her fatal auto accident. Just occurred to me that the Bluesky readers might be too young to even know who they were. ;-)
This will either blow your mind or spoil your day: If you're not aware already, a young Billy Joel was once in a Led Zeppelin-esque band called Attila. You can hear their only album on YouTube.
😂 I will say in fairness, he has said many times that he doesn’t like his own singing voice and is always trying to be someone else. McCartney, Jagger, Brooks, Charles. You can actually hear in on a lot of the album cuts.
Sounds awesome. And yea…he does it a lot. Some of the unreleased stuff on “My Lives” is incredible. I wish he’d do full versions of: “Only the Good Die Young” as a reggae tune. “River of Dreams” as a Ray Charles/gospel cut.
Yup. Ya tapped into my all time favorite singer.
And I’ll flip it for you too. I always thought “Oh what a night” was Billy Joel. Nope…Frankie Valli. 🤦♂️
Not a secret, it turns out! I just heard him on John Mayer's podcast saying "I always wanted to sing like somebody else, I never liked the sound of my own voice."
I thought that "The Test" was simply the most fabulous piece of work U2 had ever done, until I discovered it was by the Chemical Brothers. It is a truly amazing track and U2 are still overrated, if you ask me.
You can’t make it up. Came out in the car to the book store. Plugged my phone and hit shuffle on the music. Bingo “Got a call from an old friend…..” 🙌🏼🎹
No dear one your havent 🥰 That song has real power for me, should listen to it more. I was 16 when I heard it and loved it. Didn’t know who Billy Joel was 🤗 But his songwriting man 🙌🏼
Also: all of my favorite artists have a tribute band now. I think I must be getting to a certain age. 😉 I saw a Tom Petty tribute band a while back that was Amazing.
That sounds right... but as a lowly guitarist, I'd have to take your word for it.
Jealous of anyone that can play piano... I've spent a very long time trying to figure out a way to play NY State of Mind on guitar
I’m not actually any sort of pianist. I own an electric piano and occasional fiddle about on it. I bought a guitar years ago, and a book on how to play the guitar. Owning these two objects has not conferred guitar playing ability on me. My eldest son now has the guitar lol
At karaoke once someone sang a fab four song, and the next person came up and did "Don't Ask Me Why" and my friend turned to me and said, "What is this, 'Beatles Night??'"
If i had it on a CD or had streamed it then I would know who it was.
I have heard it on the radio and liked it. I don’t know who performs every single song I have liked in my life & I would say that’s fairly normal.
I'm not saying Billy Joel copied McCartney, but his vocal mannerisms and writing style were very similar, especially in the early days. The middle eight of My Life is so Paul and Linda, and I love it for being so.
I did that with a wailing song. I said "Oh Celine, nothing is that tragic"...then I found out it was Christina Agulara. I said "Sorry Celine ... but don't think that means I like you."

I remember it being in the charts.
Sorry you've had abuse over this bab.
It’s ok, i am just too soft 🥹

I want to find out all the other songs I have been imagining was someone else now 😄
late 70's US tv.
before splash & his career took off.
In My Life and Got To Get You Into My Life
Macca needs to learn some brevity
Now I don’t feel quite so inept. I was more into reggae, ska, motown and soul back in those days.
Then...
Jealous of anyone that can play piano... I've spent a very long time trying to figure out a way to play NY State of Mind on guitar
i also instinctually thought Live and Let Die was stevie wonder for no discernible reason
Now you know it's Billy Joel, do you still love it?
