It's definitely hard to snag a job "efficient" in giving downtime and money (which ends up usually tech/programming jobs) to then be happy working on programming projects. I feel lucky with my situation, but a lot of us might need to be influencer-type programmers to sustain living.

That's such a weird advice to give. SWE have great opportunities, why would you skip on them if you're passionate ? My recommendation would be too seek high agency positions, either in small companies or in companies that respect devs autonomy.

If programming pays the bill, then try to do it at a place that cherishes the fun and utility of programming. If not, at least, keep work programming separate from fun programming; it is hard but doable.

You could try using the commute to switch off your office brain, e.g., mentally prep for that evening's programming activity. Allocate an hour or two for programming related activities, e.g., read blogs/papers/books, contribute to OSS. If you have an itch, start a project to scratch it. Good luck!

Personally am doing gamedev. Seeing things actually move on the screen and you interacting with them can be so relieving if your dayjob is the boring numbercrunch or generally slow style of dev (due to dependencies etc.). Easiest entry: Find your favorite game and try recreating a small part of it.
