The Verge article seems pretty fair, I suspect Bluesky is growing fast enough that it will have to think about compliance with EU rules - which will kick in when the user number is twice what it is today.
yes.
Thats what people arent really getting too when they claim the EU is old and doesnt understand technology.
Bluesky will need to register within the EU to be able to continue doing its thing (thats a normal expectation) and thus thats what they mean with their EU "office" here.
WHERE THEY ARE LEGALLY ESTABLISHED? I mean, do they mean in what country, or where we're legally established like our address? Are we gonna be doxxed by the EU? lol <--(nervous laughter.)
Not to worry - will take 3 years and 3000 pages report to confirm that as at the end of November 2024 BlueSky didn't have a EU office but a new report is needed for 2027.
Its not the governments job to seek out a company to make sure the register, thats the companies job.
The Bluesky team will definitely get a pass since they grew really fast out of nowhere.
All theyll have to do is register in any EU country.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think y'all are underestimating the problem here. I am really surprised that nobody checked out the EU regulations on privacy & data protection. They have been in place for over 7 years now. https://www.trade.gov/european-union-data-privacy-and-protection
Bluesky is violating almost every EU privacy regulation. If you want to do business in the US, you have to comply with US law. Well... if you want to do business in Europe...
The @bsky.app team are the most accessible ever, I don’t know what you’re talking about.
The problem is the bureaucrats dinosaurs not bothering emailing the team and go through 27 different administrations instead. They are hopeless indeed
They still need to set up some way to stay in contact with EU government bodies. The most common way would be to set up at least a digital office within the EU.
The Commission is not some dinosaur that doesnt understand the internet🙄

And the president of the EC is here but her handle is invalid still https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:wr6esgkuixhvsge3ueraz6yb
That doesn't sound Orwellian at ALL.
Everyone knows that Bluesky is going to register in Ireland, just like every other US tech company
So they are waiting for news from the Irish regulators that Bluesky registered there
And they would eventually contact Bluesky if they don't register anywhere, but for now they are happy to wait
