I don’t think anyone should be using mythology from any part of the world in general unless the writing shows there was definite research put into it, and the author talked to actual expects before publishing to the public.

I actually have the opposite problem. I run an RPG set in a mythic historic Baltics/ broader Eastern European setting and it's really hard to get players to see pagans and their deities as anything but uncomplicated good guys standing up to the mean crusaders. I try to research as much as I can.

I hate it when people do that, they touch on non western mythologies/Gods and it's always in a bad lighting. Or the fact anything with more then two arms is always portayed as bad for some reason, which seems like an insult to certain faiths and mythologies.

Baba Yaga only appears briefly in my novella, but to get her right I still did my homework and read some folklore and a couple folktales that she shows up in. And I'm Ukrainian FFS. I still have to research my own culture, if you're writing outside yours then you BETTER fucking try

"The blood and body of Christ" is something Catholics have. Orthodox Christians do not have this. The Orthodox Church borrowed many religious holidays from Ukrainians, as well as from their neighbors, from ancient pagan traditions.

I think there are a lot more morally ambiguous deities than we can fathom, to our detriment, which lends itself to our lapsing into over-simplified monochromatic good versus evil morality plays with zero sum games - "guys in white hats" with uplifting music and people in black with ominous music.
