We had the same problem: only spot for the tv was over the mantel, which is too high. Hubby found an extendable mounting bracket, et voilà! TV comes out and down when in use; stays over mantel when not in use.
I love this, although you do need to be careful about fire and the TV. But it’s funny that people are going to these extremes in advice. Not you personally, just the comments in general. I want to support Tom’s TV placement.
I used to argue with my wife, "Yes honey I can do it, but I make more while I'm at work and the handy man can do it while I'm there. Also, if it's off a 1/4 inch he will sleep at night, and I won't even notice." Smart move.
I had an outlet installed behind the TV. The rest is just cord management stuff. BUT: There are holes in the drywall that allowed me to run wires to the soundbar.
You know what else is too high nowadays? Chairs. Chairs are now way off the ground and tables are either nonexistent or too small to be useful, and it’s very noticeable on TV. People interviewed perched atop chairs, perilously high and with their socks completely exposed.
It's maybe not too high for you, but it is in general. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers has a formula for calculating vertical tv height and it basically says "measure from the floor to your eyes, sitting. Now put the center of your tv there."
That's correct. But I don't assume this guy has calculated the viewing angle and set up his seating and the tv so that even though it's that high, it's as if it's right in front of him.
Now, did you actually look at the formula to see if it works for you? Maybe it saves you some pain in the future, who knows? But it’s funny you called them the TV Height Police even though I’m happy they posted that info lol.
Anybody who does? I'm not sure I get the point of the question "who cares about this thing that some people care about". Obviously some people care about home theater design. So... Those people.
It doesn't matter how high the ceilings are - it only matters how high your eyeballs are. If your eyes are 13 feet off the ground when you're sitting in front of your tv, then 13 feet is exactly where your tv should be.
I guess I'm especially grumpy tonight because it irritated me. I kind of don't get why randos just swoop in to diss someone's decor or outfit or cake or whatever that they're clearly happy about. It's just a gratuitous piece of trivial, pointless nasty.
Do they walk around telling strangers their butt looks big in those pants and their baby is ugly? Probably not, but only because they get punched a lot if they did it in person
Seriously, how do you not realize that it's rude and obnoxious to zoom in and diss someone's project that they are clearly happy with? What's the point? Just scroll on by rather than showing the world what an ass you are.
Mine is a gas fireplace, too. It was kind of a blessing in disguise bc I found a better place for the TV and I have my favorite painting over the mantle now.
Ours is , but it’s higher and the mantle sticks out , while the TV is more inset . Our fireplace is gas with a fan, which deflects any heat ! The TV is mounted on a bracket that isn’t flush against the wall.
Again, it's not the heat it's that the tv is well above the best viewing angle. It's bad for your neck to continuously look up at your tv. The tv in your photo is the proper height if you stand up to watch TV.
The angle changes depending on room size. Also, many MANY homes are literally designed to have the TV over the fireplace. It's not my personal favorite, but I'm not going to demand that people redo their homes to suit my taste.
We are seated 16 feet away and it works for us. We’ve got surround sound as well which is great when seated in other chairs / sofa . There wasn’t any other place , for it to go. We had a tech company do all of the setup.
Looks great! How cool is it that TV's are huge, in color and that thin. I remember my childhood TV was 13 inch, black and white with an antenna mounted to the roof.
Comments
I did mine a few years ago, installed the electrical plug and the boxes for the signal wires.
Looks like a wonderful system. Enjoy.
The recliner, Mich.
He’s the one watching it.
By that standard, it's too high.
It's his, not yours. Reclining...
TV looks good too
So agree.
OR MAYBE AT LEAST A ROOF
1. I would fry the TV in front of the roaring fire
2. who wants do all that every time you watch TV
Looks good
😊
