IMO, the best true crime functions as the kind of in depth anthropological studies of actual American communities that we just don't get anywhere else. They are as much (if not more) about the place the crime happened and people it happened to as it is about the perpetrator and the grizzly details.

There was a guy use ride around with no joke about 30 rakes on his bike named Jake the rake that would rake leaves in fall. Another guy now rides around with a bucket with a wooden cross in it that stops picks up trash out of the gutter all times of day. Seen him recently in rain like 3AM.

There was an old lady who shopped at our store we all called "the kerosene lady" because a strong smell of it followed her everywhere. She was apparently a nice lady, but a hoarder who used kerosene lamps for heating and it was very tragic but unsurprising when her house blew up with her in it
