I so love the soundtrack to The Revenant (Ryuichi Sakamoto, Alva Noto, and Bryce Dessner) that now when I watch the movie I’m inclined to yell at the actors to shut up!
I cannot listen to his soundtrack to The Mission and not tear up at some point. Usually, it happens in "Falls," which reaches an extreme level of feeling in just under two minutes
Makes sense as - tho I will die on the hill that is "Dollars is the best trilogy ever made" (yeah, go on: @me)... A deep part of me fully acknowledges it's near entirely down to the soundtrack.
I seriously got on to Bluesky right now just to say nearly the same thing in your post (which happened to also be at the top of my feed - was the app listening to my car stereo?). You beat me to it.
His score for The Thing is truly wonderful.
He wanted to mimic some of Carpenter's work - but obviously with his much great musical knowledge.
Definitely some Shostakovich in there.
Have you listened to "Rome" -- the 2011 album by Danger Mouse and Daniel Luppi? It's an homage to the spaghetti-western and Morricone's soundtracks. Really lovely, atmospheric songs.

It makes me feel so many emotions at the same time I really can’t explain it other than the beauty and awe of such a compelling score.

'Who Saw Her Die?' (1972)
I find it one of his more haunting scores
