meal replacement shakes are really funny because they're simultaneously great if you got an eating disorder but also absolutely the number one food item that will give you an eating disorder

i knew a guy who had been eating nothing but meal replacement shakes for like a year, and his girlfriend was getting genuinely quite upset that they could never go out to a restaurant together, and also it was fucking up his stomach like crazy, and it was wild hearing him defend it every day
I started to buy the powder I have to mix to A) give myself the option to vary how much I have and B) introduce a few steps into my routine to break the bad habit of just going for a meal shake first and foremost.
yeah I'm working hard on being less caloriebrained and getting back to being able to actually feel hunger or satiation, and I'm committed to never touching one of those things. I know that way lies nothing but trouble
it's funny bc for me my original eating disorder was v much not about calories at all but now that I'm using them it's very much starting to for the first time
I mean it's great to have them around the place for cases of "ok if I can force myself to swallow this we go from 'terrible' to 'bad but managable' on today's intake" but also dear god do these ever force you to think about calories
they basically kept me alive when uc annihilated my appetite but i didnt enjoy it and i did feel the brain worms threatening to start to take root sometimes
no, protein shakes are supposed to deliver you protein whereas meal replacements are usually formulated to be a whole ass ration where if you consume 4 of them a day you won't need to eat anything else, you'll have your cals and your macros
they're the antithesis to actual healthy eating because once you have these around the house your brain gradually loses the ability to convince itself to make an actual meal
Have one in the fridge for those situations where I really really can't put anything else together which are thankfully rarer these days but I'm happy to have them for them. Also long train journeys cause sometimes getting vegan food can be a nightmare!
for the record, I'm not saying they shouldn't exist, if anything I'm arguing that they should, idk just if you personally don't have a need for them be aware that having them in your diet can probs lead to some bad places
laziness/decision fatigue. at least some of those replacement meal shakes are formulated to have somewhat decent macros. versus say, just ordering pizza
i started throwing a banana and a handful of berries (i switch off between blueberries and raspberries) into my after-workout protein shake, and it's nice getting a heaping amount of protein + some fresh fruit in something that's tasty and takes two minutes. i've considered having them on off days
They can be a good way to get calories &/ nutrition in with various digestion related disabilities or conditions that impair a person's ability to consistently make food

Wildest thing I ever saw on these was the founder of “Soylent” saying his vision was for the stuff to come out of your faucet like a utility.
Anybody naming their replacement shake product ‘Soylent’ 😬
I like real food but grocery prices & the cost of wasting any produce to spoilage means I'll probably start doing other meals too
(i don’t think my flavor of Disordered Eating is affected by their existence, to be clear. i DEFINITELY get how they can facilitate food avoidance.)
outside of “my ability to feel hunger/chew is broken” i can’t really think of other good use cases though
I don’t want to have to drink 10 of these to be fed!
Mine are 255 and low fat :(
I would ask who’s that for but I think you already answered that.
On the one hand? No meal planning or cooking.
On the other hand it turns eating into an event as pleasurable as putting gas in your car.
