Sure wish I could set blanket "You're not allowed to be mean to me and you have to give me all your money" rules for the people in my life like oil companies can apparently do for an entire government.
u know shits bad when the oil conglomerate is saying “i make all my money off of fossil fuels but this trump guy is really gonna fuck the environment up”
This is a very level headed response and i didn’t think to expect to hear it from one of the larger drilling company’s in the US.(they purchased pioneer this year). It needs to be pushed that you can not make drastic changes. Can not undo the things that will have a large impact on the climate.
the decrepit class is dying, and those left are realizing they'll live to see the horror and finally beginning to smell the smoke. whether anything will actually come of it is unlikely
Yes, the tech brothers may be into all the free wheeling a Trump administration will allow them, but there are other players that will come into play against the administrations planned recklessness.
For instance, probably big Pharma won’t look kindly to RFK‘s dismantling vaccines availability.
Am I reading this right? He's saying that back and forth every four years is worse than dealing with stable regulations. He also can't pretend the regulations exists if they're removed because the competition wouldn't pretend they exist too.
“Woods signaled that one of the most powerful players in the energy industry might serve as a moderating influence in Washington”
This is the most depressing thing I’ve read in a while. If they can make policy better, great. But I don’t have any hope that this is anything more than a publicity move
This will be about as effective as when all the cigarette companies were forced to make anti-smoke commercials and intentionally made them lame to make smoking more cool
Id argue it was mostly campaigns from third parties, and putting labels on the cigs themselves, and less the ads from places like Truth, but agree it isn't a perfect metaphor. Just more an opinion that I don't believe Exxon cares in the slightest, except to garner good PR
There is some pretty good research from the NIH that covers everything related to the decline in smoking in the USA and I learned a lot. The ads were *a* factor but as you said there was a lot happening at once especially in the 90s.
I think one of the biggest rules that finally made smoking decline was no smoking inside businesses, restaurants and hotels. From then on you saw smoking rapidly decline.
He made statements/promises of everything even when they are contradictory — said it and then denied so opposite sides pick their beliefs. Now the infighting begins.
Weve all been part of a transporter malfunction and we're stuck in the mirror universe. Hate and violence wins electiosn oil companies plead for regulations and spock has a very lame goatee.
So... my cynical brain is saying that this might very well just be for the look of it -- he gets to look like the 'reasonable one' while still benefiting from real policies that give him money and freedom...
My silver-lining brain is wondering if maybe some are starting to think about the long-term
There were warnings about the benefits of the vaccines and measures when COVID. Do you think the Dodo tribe is going to care about things others warn them about?
“I don’t think the challenge or the need to address global emissions is going to go away,” [Exxon CEO Darren] Woods said. “Anything that happens in the short term would just make the longer term that much more challenging.”
Hi Hank, I read this too. I am admittedly confused, I agree withdrawing hurts us to have any say, but I think its pretty clear, the Petro sector wants profits, and drill baby drill hurts profits.
Texas is making gangbusters levels of solar energy right now, to say nothing of the renewable energy manufacturing market (somebody's gotta' build the turbines.)
Gutting renewable energy would have a huge negative economic impact on the US... ...but when did that ever stop Trump before?

I don't believe Exxon Guy is concerned for the reasons he says he's concerned (i.e. the environment).
There's got to be another reason.

I’m just saying, need a different metaphor. This is like a face-eating leopard worried the other leopards are running out of faces.

That should tell you a lot.
