The cruelty seems to be the point. I hear SJSU is trying to figure out how to pay students at least until the end of the school year, but talk about pulling the rug out from under people.

That's so devastating.
It's harmful to science in general, but I'm thinking about all the students whose dreams just got crushed.
All the students and phd. candidates I know put their whole life and passion into it.

Programs like U-RISE help give students from groups underrepresented in science financial support to complete mentored research so they can show their potential & get into PhD or MD/PhD programs. These students are phenomenal. Some of my best research students have been from this program 2/

Many of them are in PhD programs, postdocs, or working at unis/companies. They are helping to figure out better treatments for Parkinson's Disease & hearing loss, developing new biotech tools, and helping us understand the basic workings of cells. This is a talent pool the US can't afford to lose 3/

My last student from this program won a grad research award where she competed against students from all 23 Cal States. The implication that these students aren't worthy of our support is insulting. I worry these cuts will lose us an entire gen of talented scientists 4/

Last week at #FASEBOnTheHill I shared our concern that this grant & others like it would be cut and just reached out to the offices we met w, including @liccardo.house.gov and @schiff.senate.gov to ask them to advocate for these programs. end/
