Fun fact: In the 1940s, Prof. Gamow and his student Mr. Alpher wrote a paper on the ratios of elements in the early universe. Prof. Gamow was a wiseguy and included Prof. Bethe as a co-author, much to the dismay of Mr. Alpher. The paper is still known as the Alpher, Bethe, Gamow paper.
I want it to be the other way around! I want the Greeks to have first come up with a word for alphabet and then thought: hmmm, we now need to give names to the letters, how about alpha for the first letter, beta for the second letter...
