The Trump administration has suggested bringing the U.S. Postal Service under White House control, and having mail carriers conduct the census. Here's what to know about the controversial ideas.

Hmmm... I could have sworn a little thing called the Postal Reorganization Act was signed into law in 1970. Didn't that law turn the postal service into an independent agency?
This is a horrible idea. They have already proven that they are utterly destructive and incompetent and radical in their power grab. They want POWER and WEALTH for their own good, not for the country, not for you.
For the past five years the postal service has been telling anyone who sends mail to my home that I moved to an apartment across town. I’ve never lived there. I’ve tried to get USPS to stop it and just asked a second elected official to assist, to no avail. What kind of census will they complete?
As if postal carriers don’t have enough to do delivering the regular mail, parcels for Amazon, and all the shit people order online. Long gone are the days of simple mail delivery. USPS is a poorly paid version of Amazon these days.
That’s what I’m saying. I’m a former census worker (under Obama) and it’s not an easy job; it’s time consuming. There’s no way they’d have time for any of that.
That’s called a CBU. Postal carriers do not get any extra time/money delivering to those monstrosities. In fact they lose money/time. Try stuffing online orders into parcel boxes when customers don’t empty them in a timely manner and wind up having to get out of the truck to scan/hand deliver.
@npr.org The "suggestion" in unconstitutional and does not belong to WH control - do better with the headlines to be accurate. The intent of the postal services is serve for the people, not for the profit.
Trump tried to corrupt both the U.S. census and the U.S. Postal Service during his first term.
The fact that Trump is firing the Postmaster General to undermine the 2020 election demonstrates his eventual disloyalty to those who help him advance his unethical and sometimes illegal personal agenda

would they be leaving their 50 lb mail bags in our homes, while they add conducting the consensus to their daily work load?
-and will they get paid parking - or places to park where there ARE NO PLACES TO PARK?
Yes. The attack on our government & democratic rights is well-planned & complete. Project 2025 with $$ billions backing it up. Trump/Musk et. al. will demolish as much as they can, root & branch.
I don’t see this going well. My postal carrier already lies and claims to have attempted to deliver certified mail. Says we weren’t home, without ever coming to our door. They’re apparently already overworked.
They want everything under WH control.
Which makes sense from their perspective.
Except it just doesn’t work.
Except in making everything collapse and behead the country
Every aspect of the government under Trump must be considered illegitimate and as such anyone who participates in it is lending it credibility when it has none. And thus participating at all amounts to treason. Time to quit and form a parallel legitimate government.
Say goodbye to small town POs. Say goodbye to sanctity of the mail. Living in rural hard to reach areas could make your mail service expensive. Companies who buy up bits and pieces of the PO won't care about getting your mail or drugs to you. Just$$$
I was a census taker. They're going to need to hire a lot of mail carriers to do this. Census workers only need training in collecting the census and are temporary workers. This is a dumb and bad idea.
"...Normal people with properly functioning brains have since attempted to explain to Trump how insanely, horrifically bad an idea this is on every conceivable level.
"Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers gave him a frantic, tear-streaked standing ovation for ten minutes upon hearing the proposal."
WTF? God, that weirdo is just so stupid. I want to see him out in rural Michigan knocking on some MAGA doors to ask them for their personal information for the gubmint. 😂
Having been an enumerator for both the 2010 and 2020 census, this unworkable idea. It will greatly slow down the delivery of mail, plus how are they going to vary their work schedule so they can knock indoors in the evenings and Sundays to find people home?
I concur with others who are asking… How specifically is that supposed to work with millions of people receiving their mail at a remote location that is not their residence?? And agreed with the person who said this is simply bat shit crazy. 😒
Privatizing the U.S. mail means that entity (the government or a billionaire) will control if and or when you get mail and how much you will have to pay for it. It also means they can/will read your mail anytime they choose. Oh, and no more mail-in ballots. Vote in person or not at all.
I'm having a hard time understanding how the right considers the privatization of the USPS and all the consequences you mentioned as an increase in "liberty and freedom"
Since Trumpy is trying to take the US back to the 1930s, or medieval times, maybe he'll have the postal workers use one page paper forms and a pen and write only in caligraphy.
If I were trying to take over a country financially and politically, first
I’d try to get control of the skies, with my equipment. Then control science, disinformation without progress.

Ground control - USPS
Does he even know that in rural areas, some people get their mail at the post office*, in apartment buildings there's usually one big multi-user mailbox, and mail carriers don't walk up to everybody's door?
* AZ GOP knows that's common on Native American Reservations, used it to suppress votes.
They need to stay independent, the board that runs them needs to be given the power to run it without Congress or the President screwing around with it.
It can do fine if they just let them run it like they should.
If it comes from that orange stain, it’s a horrible idea. . The Postal Service is what is in the name. A service. Leave it alone. The same way leave the National Parks alone. How the hell did we get here?
This isn’t reform – it’s sabotage. Bureaucratic chaos disguised as efficiency. They’ll claim it’s about streamlining – it’s about control. Surveillance, gerrymandering, and dismantling a public service they can’t dominate.
Mail carriers aren’t census workers. The USPS isn’t a partisan tool. It’s one of the last functional public services, despite decades of GOP sabotage – and now they’re coming for it again.
Smashing two independent institutions together like a toddler forcing mismatched LEGOs isn’t governance – it’s destruction.

United States Postal Service (USPS) is in the Constitution in Article I, Section 8, Clause 7. This clause is also known as the Postal Clause or the Postal Power.
Are we seriously thinking about letting 45 rewrite the Constitution??
USPS employees conducting the census? REALLY?!?
No, thanks... they can't even keep their employees from stealing/tampering with the mail as it is, so...
It not going to get better, having a do nothing the right way, Non Stable Genius doing anything more he's unqualified to think about doing. He's lucky he can wipe his own ass!
I love my mail carrier but that poor man struggles hard in the dead of a Florida summer. I can't imagine him trying to juggled packages and take the census. He already left the USPS once, & they offered him more retirement to come back

Please please protect our USPS.
Read it.
Congress has the authority to establish post offices and post roads. Not the executive.
Congress.
This is not controversial.
The fact that Trump is firing the Postmaster General to undermine the 2020 election demonstrates his eventual disloyalty to those who help him advance his unethical and sometimes illegal personal agenda
It must have originated from one of the Kings men or his billionaire lords. He’s not smart.
It's a crackpot idea hatched in this White House.
That's it. That's all you need to know.
-and will they get paid parking - or places to park where there ARE NO PLACES TO PARK?
The White House and Office of the President and Vice President.
Which makes sense from their perspective.
Except it just doesn’t work.

I would send your headline back for revisions.
"Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers gave him a frantic, tear-streaked standing ovation for ten minutes upon hearing the proposal."
Still remember the Trump supporting census guy from last time.
We have shed
does anyone live there
No
that's what they all say
No.
Especially in rural areas, we need them to continue the jobs they do and support them.
Am I missing something?
"Controversial" meaning it's split down party lines because it's a dumb idea but Republicans are incapable of saying no.
Yet again, this has nothing to do with efficiency or cutting costs and everything to do with control and privatization. Shocking.
That was one reason Trump trying to push for the census to only count citizens was a big deal in 2020. It’s used for a bit more than that now.
I’d try to get control of the skies, with my equipment. Then control science, disinformation without progress.
