I did not expect to like WICKED. I certainly didn't think I'd be heading back for round two tonight. Taking my gf and her friends, and genuinely excited to see their reactions.

However... and I'm not joking about this... I am losing some of my upper register in my hearing as I get older, and I had sooooo much trouble with Arianna Grande's lyrics. I might opt to use captioning in the theater tonight so I can pick up what I missed.
I’m only 33 but I also had this issue - especially at the start. Thought it was just my theatre but maybe it’s an overall mix issue. Listening to the soundtrack means I now know what I missed at least.
Yeah. I think it's a big broad audience movie. It is a big emotional experience that's a lot of fun to share with a crowd. And you'd be hard-pressed not to be moved by the ending.
Same reaction as me, honestly. I'm not a musical fan at all, but I really enjoyed it. I'm even looking forward to Part 2...? That's not something I ever expected to happen. EVER.
I like IN THE HEIGHTS a whole lot. It was more the material I was skeptical of. Not a huge fan of the book, and I feel like the musical has already influenced so many things that got made before the film (coughWEDNESDAYcough) that it put them in a defensive position from the jump.
Perhaps it helped in the long run - the material had something to prove again after all the Frozens and Maleficents and Descendants and Wishes that Disney alone produced. (I'm surprised more people haven't noticed how much of Wish knocks off the musical Wicked, but without the stakes.)
I am pleasantly surprised how this movie won over many who were not familiar with the stage musical. Usually when a Broadway mega-musical makes it to big screen the reaction from the public upon seeing it is usually "WAIT THIS IS THE PLOT?!"
Not judgy, just brief.
I'm curious why you would spend time & money to see a movie you don't think you'll enjoy. But I'm glad you did end up enjoying it.
I ask who else you went with because statistically people are less likely to see a movie alone.
Ah, film critic, that was the missing piece of the story that pulls it together for me!
"I saw Wicked with my gf, loved it" or "GF forced me to see Wicked but I loved it" are the more common story, so your "loved Wicked, surprisingly. now gonna take gf" made me want to know more.

I see pretty much everything. I see a lot of things I'm not sure I'll like. My gf does not go to a lot of it with me.
Why do you assume I went with someone else? Strange jump to make.

No judgment either way.
I've been a movie critic for 30 years and a movie fan all my life. I see movies I have no idea if I'll like because movies frequently surprise me.
