Ok maybe some of you were *exposed* to jambands because of a studio album but jambands by nature are a live beast.

Um… not me. I started at 16yrs old in bars listening to Dead cover bands in Lake George NY… 1985. I didn’t even know it was the Dead. Phish was with cassette tapes of shows in 1991.

Not me. My first exposure to the Grateful Dead was 4/12/78. My second show was 4/16/78. In between I tore up all the shows my buddy had on tape. I’m not really sure when I heard the first GD studio album or when I last listened to one.

But I saw all of them w/in months of hearing the studios-as advised by my elders. I’m an old, so despite seeing lots of early 90s hamband shows, not always tapes or dats (remember those? lol) available right away. Mainly just trading old GDead shows on cassette in those days.

Not me. I'd heard Truckin' and Casey Jones on the radio, but I had never listened to a GD album before my first show. And I was a complete convert after those shows. Hell, I was into it before the house lights went down because Bill Walton welcomed me aboard.

I bought Skeletons from the Closet in JR high based on only the cover and band name. It was NOT what I expected from a band called The Grateful Dead but I was transfixed. I found Phish in college… but to your point it was a studio album (a greatest hits no less) that brought me here.

Nope. Didn’t know jambands existed. My brother took me to Summerfest when I was 15 to see SCI, which was the year Big Summer Classic was happening and they took over that day. So after the fact I looked up all the other bands on the lineup on Archive and at was all livetapes for me for years
