Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) is one of the few to bring up AI's environmental impact, asking if federal government should be studying that. Smith says that sounds fine. Altman is skeptical, saying he thinks the focus on AI's climate downsides has gotten "out of whack" compared to the potential benefits.

Environmental concerns are very relevant.
What AI regulation?
Noting that AI is already widely used in coding, Altman says: "It's not like people don't hire software engineers anymore. They work in a different way, and they're way more productive."
"I do think things are gonna change quite substantially," he says, but "humans have a wonderful ability to adapt."
Altman: "Probably not." Says ChatGPT better for "some use cases," but Google is a "ferocious competitor" with a "well-protected business" [antitrust dig!] that is "making great progress putting AI into their search."
