Something a lot of people do not notice in this video is there are at least two Orcas in the water, pushing the ice. That is why the Penguin did not want to swim.
There is a longer version of this video and it is easier to see the second one. You can barely see it in the first couple seconds in this video. Look for a small patch of white in the water between the ice.
I watched this with the sound off, and my brain supplied 'O, Fortuna!' as the penguin scurried... When it slid back towards the others, brain continued with a roaring cheer...
You don't know how steep that shelf is going to be, so if the penguin is in the water, it might not be able to create enough propulsion to jump out of water onto the land. Then, it is at further risk of predation
