Well that’s bizarre. Why the fuck would an Australian want to own a plantation in the United States!! Actually, I imagine it would be because he’s a white supremacist, but what a deeply weird way for somebody from AUSTRALIA of all places to express that white supremacy.
Joseph Jaeger Jr. died 11 months ago. He was also flambéd.
The family seems to have a history of using venues inappropriately. His memorial service was held at Mardi Gras World. 😲
As an Australian I've never even heard of him but in his wikipediia article "In 2017, the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation was launched" it tracks that he'd buy a slave plantation.
I'm not sure who currently owns the burnt husk, but Paul Ramsay died in 2014. I've been treated in a Ramsay hospital and they definitely had the vibe of overpriced, excessive rich people place owned by evil people who buy former plantations so it makes sense. Disgusting.
I visited Nottaway as a kid - most people in my area of Louisiana did, I think, we lived not far from it growing up.
The world is better with it burned. The houses for enslaved peoples still stand. I'm glad they outlasted the place that housed the people who put them through hell.
I went to Oak Alley for the second time last year and was pleased that they have made more strides in their presentation highlighting the life of the slaves. Much more prominent than it was 12 years ago. We went right after visiting Whitney for the first time so there was quite a bit of whiplash.
Part of me wants the plantations all given to decedents of slaves rather than burned. But honestly I’m not quite sure what the right thing to do is nor do I think it is my place as a white person to say.
I can imagine an argument for maintaining the property as an historical site. We need to not forget. But the idea of turning it into a destination resort, for weddings no less, is making me nauseated. Far from a reminder of a shameful chapter in our history, they seem to have created a shrine to it.
Somebody call the police and... sorry I forgot. I also didn't see anything. I'm pretty sure the fire was caused by an implosion of air, or spontaneous combustion (EXTREMELY-RARE)
Clearly this needs an arson investigation, property prices are weak, lot of profit in burning it down and blaming ‘radical left’ forces is about as on brand as you can get from someone who decided ‘yeah, I’ll buy a plantation and rent it out for weddings’.
My gut reaction to anything "historical" being destroyed is "oh no!" and sadness, but this place was being used as a wedding venue and resort? A billionaire's business venture? Fuck it. Not exactly a shortage of that shit. Too much, really. I'll save my tears for a museum.
I mourn the architecture because I love old buildings, but it should have been used for a much more appropriate purpose- such as a black history museum etc

You would reach more people, when you add a good description into the Alt-text field.
That is pretty easy, especially, when your image just contain text.
This way, you support visually impaired people and everyone else, who rely on a good filled Alt-text.
