Mine comes running when she hears the blanket get moved. The rules are that the lap with the blanket is the better lap, unless both laps have a blanket, in which case the lap that is the most flat/cradle-like is the ultimate lap.
I even have to put a blanket down on the couch next to me and then I have to pretend I'm not doing it for him, and then I had to look away so he can jump up and cuddle up next to me
I have one who will only sit with me if there’s a blanket (especially if I’m sleeping and unaware of his presence)
I have another one who will only sit with me if there no blanket and I don’t understand her aversion to them
My cat Rowena does this. What interesting is that she didn’t start waiting until after I started gently saying “ouch” whenever her claws would poke me when she would knead. So she waits until there’s a blanket to avoid “hurting” me
Oh yes, Luna needs me to be sitting in a specific chair AND have an empty cushion on my lap before she’ll grace me with her presence. Fortunately for her, that’s the way I usually sit (the cushion is for balancing my phone, laptop or book).
I used to put a pillow on my lap for Kitty, and her sharp claws. She seems to like sitting on. My slacks better. I think she wants the warmth from my legs. And she keeps her claws in!
Kelly Kameowski will absolutely not sit on my husband's naked knees. She will sit on his lap if he has pants, but if he's wearing shorts, she won't sit with him unless he puts a blanket over his legs.
Mine have bladder detectors. They know the exact moment I am thinking I need to get up and have a wee. Then then cute themselves, flop belly up, and ask for belly scritches, while sitting on my bladder. Then the question To pee or not to pee, that is the question. Proof of said stinkery
My cat only wants to sit on my husband’s lap when he’s sitting at our kitchen counter. I think he thinks it’s a cheat for getting *onto* the counter without being shooed off.
yes. When I adopted my cat I thought he wasn't a lap cat. For years. But one day I had a folded blanket blanket on my lap and he crawled right up on top of it and went to sleep. That became the new requirement to get COL (cat on lap)
Yes. But also it needs to be the preferred side of the blanket. I mistakenly invited her to sit on the smooth velvety side but she politely refused until I turned it over to the fleecy side. If there’s no blanket there’s no sit, although she’ll stare from a distance to drop a hint.
they'll sit on me regardless, it's just that they do not take note if I do not have a blanket over my legs, and thus, when they leap on me claws out, I'm going to scream and fling them off again
Mine also sits on my lap without a blankie once in a while, when she feels like it.
But I have a secret weapon that gets her every time: blanket hoodies
Yup! And her gracious majesty is only one year old and only lives with me since 6 months. She trained me well already. I can't wait to see if her royal highness (totally a mutt we found in the streets) will need further accomodations in the weeks to come ^^'
Not just cats. Our tiny dog (smaller than our cats) also insists that laps must be covered before sitting. It is clearly the preferred, nay required method of sitting in a lap.
No my cat will sit on my lap no matter what. It’s kind of uncomfortable in the summer - it’s hot enough in Phoenix without having 12 pounds of fur on my lap.
Mine don’t discriminate, but they only knead/wrestle each other/do other stuff that results in my legs getting scratched up if I’m wearing shorts 😭
Murphy’s Law of cats on laps I guess…
no, but I'm usually wearing fleece pajama pants.
my husband will throw a blanket over his lap to entice the cat to come over and sit - and it works quite a bit for him.
Doesn’t she? The first time I saw a photo of Hazel, I gasped. I’d never known a fluffy tortie before our Alice. Now I know a few, like Kat @aquavirago.bsky.social and they all look so alike.
I’ve had success by lifting her in a box she’s curled up in, but she’ll never do more than step across a lap.
My mother's cat requires a pillow, a blanket alone is insufficient for her. She WILL jump on and back off and then stand at your feet and scream until you put the pillow on when she wants to sit on you, 'how dare you not be prepared to welcome my majesty'.

Meanwhile I’m the one who insists on a blanket for our cat because he likes to affectionately Claw Stab. 😂

they learn nothing from this
