I've ridden public transit in most major cities, and to the extent that it's dangerous anywhere, the reason it's dangerous is because the transit cops are rousting homeless people instead of riding the trains looking for troublemakers

I rode the NYC subway in the mid-1980s and have stories that would absolutely fuckin terrify these guys but I never felt UNSAFE, just surrounded by WEIRD sometimes.

9 San Pablo Bus in SF in the 90s:
It went past the public hospital. On two separate occasions there was a guy in a hospital gown dragging IV tubes.
Not sanitary, but didn't hurt anyone.

When I was homeless in Chicago, I would save up for a $20 pass and just ride trains end to end to pass the time and see the city. It was fun. Transit is fun!

Another time I sat next to a guy who had just gotten out of prison on the way from Vegas to SLC and he taught me to air-guitar while we shared a set of earbuds.

The absolute worst thing that ever happened to me on a bus was the time I sat down and the seat was wet bc the last person peed.

Oh wait I take it back the pee seat was the second worst thing. The worst was the time I caught an absolutely BRUTAL flu and got stranded for three days in bumfuck nowhere because a popcorn festival shut down the whole town and the buses couldn’t get in. Pee seat was also pretty bad though.

Part of what made being stranded so awful was the part where my sleeping accommodations were as close to a very active set of train tracks as it’s legal to build. Bring delirious with fever in a sleeping bag on the floor at 2am with a train running by 20ft away is an EXPERIENCE.

IME the biggest danger on the DC Metro is that it won't get you to work on time due to unplanned delays, but sometimes people will share food and chat while waiting. Not exactly terrifying.
