I often see Fairytale of New York being called a great Christmas song but I don’t get it. The singer starts the song in a drunk tank (not exactly a fairytale Christmas!) and there’s very little that’s festive about the marital problems he appears to be having

Everything changes but stays the same - the irony of the cops being Irish and singing Irish songs, and the same arguments happening wherever you are.
You: yes haha 🧑🎄
Shane: Down in the drunk tank
You: oh😞
Talk about a crappy family situation.
😀
Mary Bradley waits at home
In the nuclear fallout zone
Wish I could be dancing now
In the arms of the girl I love
Wish I could be home for "Christmas"
*Searches around frantically for context*

Cunningham's Law is the idea that posting the wrong answer on the internet is a better way to get the right answer than asking a question. Great for ‘driving engagement’ too.
And make no mistake, this is an incorrect statement
When I first found you."
"I kept 'em with me, babe.
I kept them with my own."
Enough said.
Sounds like a Christmas song to me!
There are no records of it, and Roman censuses did not require travel.
So yes, a fairytale.
First I've heard of this in 20 of years of belting her out!
Still - a great song.
And it's Christmassy as heck.

It’s also been my favorite Christmas song for 20 years or so.
It reminds me of one of my favorite John Prine songs

How much more Christmassy can you get?
If the Spirit of Christmas isn't finding brief warmth from the cold, then I dunno what to tell you
That is all.
Rest in Peace
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you” … some of the most beautiful lyrics ever written
No one is perfect
The song is about him realising what is important to him whilst at his lowest ebb.
It is a song of hope
When I first found you."
"I kept them with me babe.
I put them with my own.
Can't make it all alone.
I've built my dreams around you."
It's about love in a bad place and a dark time.
Were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas day”
Its a Christmas song!
“…You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can't make it all alone
I've built my dreams around you”
