Australia has zero tariffs on the US. We have a free trade agreement. Some things are banned for biosecurity reason and other legislation (like some guns), that’s it. The Trump mob can’t get basic facts right!
I’m assuming “discounted” just means it’s not on par with the tariffs they impose on their own citizens. his supporters think other countries pay the tariff so it’ll work on them 😒
Maybe we could let him have a war against the Heard and Macdonald islands. Have an impressive victory and he could leave us all alone instead of trashing the economy.
Norfolk Island is a tiny remote semi autonomous territory which is a part of Australia for trade purposes and I’d be frankly gobsmacked if it actually exports anything.
We do still trade with Russia, although at much lower rates because of sanctions, which Trump just said he and Putin are working to lift. We still have sanctions on Iran and they are on the list.
Surprisingly, Israel is on the list. Voting against UN resolution reaffirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity with Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Hungary and the USA.
Oh, and maybe Hungary should leave the European Union.
I poked around trying to figure out what list these chuds started with and couldn't find anything that made sense. The inclusion of Heard and McDonald Islands, as others have noted, is nonsensical. Was it just a straight up Grok job?
Yeah I figure it's either got to be guano, phosporus, or it is used as some sort of customs/trade tax loop hole type thing. It's not a lot of trade (something like 500USD in January 2025, but it's not nothing.
Yep. Australian soveriegn territory, but no one lives there. Ocassional amateur 'ham' radio operators visit to 'operate from' those islands on 'DXpeditions' - apart from that, it's just penguins.
I wonder what the penguins export to the US? Penguin poo?
Same as Norway and Svalbard… I also wonder how the hell they are going to collect all those different taxes. Guess some magical AI from Melon will just appear out of the mist…
Yeah, and the entire population of the British Indian Ocean Territory consists of military personnel and contractors, unless any of them run Etsy stores I'm guessing they don't export anything.
The list is a joke - tariffs on uninhabited islands and made up data for supposed tariffs other countries impose on the US. E.g. New Zealand is virtually tariff-free on all imports (we do however have a 15% Goods & Services Tax aka VAT on ALL things sold in NZ whether imported or not)
so it seems the tariff charged to the US that they are retaliating against is a simple calc on the trade deficient - nothing to do with taxes / tariffs. Just making shit up really. Not serious people just fucking over the worlds economy!!
And it would be nigh on impossible for us (NZ) to change our GST approach as it’s designed to be a consumption tax on absolutely sold ie. is simple to administer (even for small 1 person businesses like I used to be)
So - hilariously if it wasn't disastrous - NZ could put 20% tariffs on US goods if it wants as the US has stated its 10% tariff is on the basis NZ is charging 20%!!!!
Yeah, although I've since seen someone doing the maths and showing that the "20%" is actually the trade deficit rather than any actual tariffs in place (which is still a wildly bonkers data point to base things on)
It's bizarre that he takes trade deficits as an affront when it's determined by US consumers choices. The logical extension is to sell high margin goods to US in modest quantities and buy low margin goods from them in higher quantities as the only way to avoid getting dinged with penalties 🤦🏻♂️
Where the fuck is Russia? That is probably the most telling thing of this shit. Whoever thinks the US is still on "our" team well there is no doubt anymore. Trump's has sold the US to the Putin regime.
According to "a White House spokesperson" it's because current sanctions mean that there is "no meaningful trade with Russia at present" - though there is clearly more than with islands inhabited only by penguins!
To be clear, are these the new tariffs Trump is imposing vs what other countries were charging us before or are these the tariffs other countries are hitting back with in response to Trump's tariffs?
Am I missing something but it is in no particular order?
Would have cost too much to sort it some way?
No head of a company would accept a graphic or report as jumbled as this.
Typical of the doofuses running this country right now.
Nothing personal but the skeptic in me had to check that this unorganized and sloppy list was real.
Every major news org is publishing it so it is.
They probably started working on this this morning and scrabbled something together at the last minute.
At least it looks that way.
Tariffs are paid by the receiving country of the goods supplied. USA does not pay a tariff to a country they export too. If a Tariff is applied by the receiving country there companies/ ppl importing the goods pay it.

10% is the minimum for everyone.
25% tariff on UK cars is the same as everyone.
So much for the brown nosing with a state visit....dropping digital tax for USA giants.
say, aren't there some bros in tech who wanted this administration?
they're fine with this, right
Madness.
Why would he upset his boss?
and what does "discounted" mean here?
“No.”
“Then how does a 10% tariff sound to you??”
The tariff is on penguins.

I can't see Mexico either, maybe some confusion about The Gulf naming convention.
We need to start a Gofundme for the penguins.

European Union: 20% (charges U.S. 39%)
I call it a win for the European Union, in regard to this insane list.
Oh, and maybe Hungary should leave the European Union.
What's 77% of that?

Thanks for your insight.
Penguins are gathering, after fishing & preening, to make an announcement.
I’ve had a look and can’t see where Norfolk Island, which has random lost penguins, & is an Australian territory, can set its own tariffs.
I wonder what the penguins export to the US? Penguin poo?
Confirms that theory that the list was a result of Trump's personal bigly geopolitical expertise.
Meanwhile in the US, where the stock market and dollar are plummeting; it's #LiquidationDay.
Never mind.
